Ive changed jobs a few times already so Its not a new feeling, there is that moment of "Awwww, Ill never see these people again", those thoughts soon become, "Thanks strawberry float I dont have to deal with this strawberry floater ever again".

I have just had another spanner thrown in the works and my also have the option of moving elsewhere in the country.

I work pretty much flat out all the time I'm at work. I'd say I end up doing an average of around 9 hours a day, although I do always make time in the middle (about half an hour) for lunch.

I also not infrequently work a bit here and there maybe one evening a week, perhaps for an hour or so at the weekend, just to tide things over.

I hold expect that it would be low.

For example today I found time to play Minecraft for a bit this afternoon when I found out our webernet allowed it ( the laptop always was)

I reckon I do about 2 hours of proper head down work per day, on average. Though some days I can be working all day, sometimes I'll do almost literally nothing. I'd much prefer to be working all the time, I actually love the work part of my job. The times when I'm rammed with work are great. The stretches of nothing are really boring.

I work in performance reporting and probably do 5 hours of head down work with a couple of hours a day spare which I use to learn other (work related) stuff.

However, as of as of last week I have a new line manager, and his first task was to assume that I didn't have anything pressing to do (wrong) and give me some some work that should be undertaken by someone in admin, not an analyst.

Head down/meeting/intense designing is probably 2hrs on a good day, emails/client liaison/marketing .5-1hrs per day, fabrication 2+ hours on a good day, 0 "work" on a bad day but 90% of mental activity focused towards even vaguely work related things.

Some days 4-6hrs doing just one of those things , my business is only set up part time though. I occasionally work 12+ hours to meet deadlines.
I'm probably about 10% efficient but I very rarely do bad work, just slow.

Increasingly I'll be able to be more efficient with better processes, work 30-40hrs solid and have more revenue that way. Not financially motivated however, so it may not happen. Actually, I look at people who work less and earn more than fulltime people, which is a lot easier than some people think (although requires a lot of work and risk upfront).

I'm more motivated by interesting work. It's when I have no design briefs that it's really hard to make a day fulfilling because then I actually have to rely solely on personal motivation and creativity, which is hard.

I constantly change jobs so mine has varied from 9/10 hours a day of basically non stop work to doing strawberry float all for about 95% of the day. I’m like smurphy I prefer doing gooseberry fool, get bored and feel unproductive otherwise.

Yeah same. Shitty motivation problems aside, I can really surprise myself just how hard I can work. Fat chance I'm in the right mood most the time though, on those days I just work incredibly slowly.

Never felt appreciated on those good/awesome work days where you do loads of good gooseberry fool though, especially next to people doing nothing. So if I'm really effective or really slow, either way I get the benefit/loss, which is fair enough for me.

For example right now it's 1am but I have 5 or 6 decal orders, I'm doing each one of those 5 times so I won't have to make any of the design for another few weeks so can do other stuff.

Of course that only works if you can anticipate demand for certain tasks in advance, one blessing of a product business.

I'm so ridiculously busy all the time, I even did four and a half hours of over time the other day and didn't stop. We're planning on expanding and getting more people soon, but everything happens so slowly here it's infuriating. I can see this being a really good job if we just had enough people to keep on top of everything, but that feels like it's months and months away, and while I've received a small bump in pay (with a vague word about more in the future) and an empty "manager" title (with no actual staff below me), it currently feels this job is most useful as something on my CV rather than actually allowing me to enjoy my life around it.

It's supervision time!! Three senior staff on dayshift have been allocated two juniors to work with. I've been given the entire nightshift. To be completed, in one shift.

Luckily the nurse on last night offered to do mine in a pro-active approach to getting things done (did it with someone I actually like and respect to avoid getting dragged in with the horrible boss at the centre of every mess).

My job goes through peaks and troughs. Sometimes I’m insanely busy and am working solidly all day, sometimes I’m scratching around trying to find something to do.

So within 5 hours of handing my notice in, my employer put up an advert for a replacement. They haven't spoken to me or even acknowledged me since I put the letter into the hands of my director.

And I'm glad. Really shows how little a gooseberry fool they value me and I'll be glad to get out.

I imagine they'll get a replacement in fast so that I have to teach them all of my accounts. Splitting the responsibility between us until I leave on December. Which is fine by me.

Updating my CV today and I'm feeling really confident about the future.

I'm always busy in work. I feel wrecked by the end of the week. Also having to listen to the people I sit near drives me up the wall. They complain constantly and bitch about people relentlessly.

I realise the irony of complaining about them complaining, but strawberry float this noise.

Employers get pissy when you make clear your intentions but as I've said many times loyalty is almost meaningless in this climate. Look out for yourself.

For those of you in settled careers/jobs how do you look for work these days? Do you use Linkedin and sites like Reed and Indeed? Or do you go directly to company websites that you are interested in?

I'm want a change in my current role but just not sure how to go about it. So I have just updated my my profile at the above mentioned sites hoping that some recruitment consultant will approach me with a job...got one so far but it was no in a desired location.

Created a LinkedIn profile today. Thought I might as well, never used it before.
