Are your workplaces like that? Or are they just normal, where you get sexist/racist jokes and the like?

On an unrelated note, it's quite concerning when you realize the some of the managers are incompetent.
I expect that is normal in most large companies? You just get the bullshitters and good talkers at the top?

I work in a very ethnically diverse company so sexist/racist jokes in the office won't go down too well!

Thinking sexist/racist jokes are normal? Such a typical Aussie.

There were a couple of fairly open racists at my old work. One of my favourite anecdotes was when a woman said that in her area (Larkhall) you just call Asian people Pakis because that's how it's always been done. A guy at another branch was fired because he asked if a Pakistani colleague with fairly light skin 'dyed his skin white' to blend it better.

My new work is so much better. Cool phrases like 'non-deterministic' get thrown around daily, and I've not even heard any 'ironic' racist jokes. Though there are a few Tories, so you can't have it all.

The problem I have with the Peter Principal is it assumes managers go through a linear progression to get to their job, it ignores all the incompetent people that were never competent at any task but got the job because of their connections.

I'd say all the places that I've worked at are normal. In that you could make a joke among friends, but making open comments about particular groups would probably get you in trouble.

This is why you come up with code names for people so you can talk about them without having to worry about them sneaking up on you. But of course they can't be obvious.

I think my all time favourite was Pocahontas. It came from a guy who wouldn't stop talking about his "vision" for a project during meetings, all while not actually doing anything. So Vision > Vison Quest > Native American > Pocahontas

So things might be looking up for me.

I got a call from my boss a few hours ago asking if I wouldn't mind being back in our office more often rather than being out on site a lot. He said my "grade - they've put levels for wages/promotions based on experience" wouldn't go up as it is now and they want to "sort out the team in our office".

This is off the back of my line manager saying that my hard work isn't going unnoticed. I've been due (based on everything anyone has ever said to me including my managers) a promotion for quite a while, so the fact this has suddenly come up after hearing that I'm going to be optimistic.

Yeah I'll miss going out on site as much, I love it here in London (minus the transport). However, if I get more money for being in the office more then so be it.

One of the companies we support doesn't archive one of the directors email accounts because "He likes to tell the girls when they are dressed nice" so never know SD might be a director one day.

I recently started being a part of this work forum thing. I'm beginning to remember why I never volunteer for anything.

I raised an issue one of my team mates had and I basically got 'your team don't volunteer for anything so STFU'.

Such a strawberry floating pointless waste of time and it seems like an ego stroking exercise/do my work for me type of thing. I was so pissed when I left.

Ran through my presentation designs and notes with the Mrs last night and I'm confident I have the ammunition I need.

The post I interviewed for the other week has been re-advertised by my status on the application ports still says in progress. Very confused, but it closes today so I'll phone them when I get in and ask what the deal is and if it's worth reapplying. I've not had an outright no yet so here's (kinda) hoping.

Yeah call them up and tell them you've seen that. It shows initiative and they can't ignore or fob you off by email then.
