Business owners sometimes get paranoid that their employees have turned toxic when really they're just treating them poorly and they are to blame for the company culture and the way they manage people. At the end of the day everything is the business owner's fault.

Sadly there's not much you can do except move someplace else, that issue isn't going to go away ever if at the top you have simply bad people. There is no point being hard working and loyal to the company as you sound if they are going to treat you poorly, it may be time to consider being more selfish and looking for something that is better for you, not them.

It's a large part of why I work extremely hard and go the extra mile for my customers, however I am only loyal to them for a matter of hours, days, or at a week or 2, producing a superior product even though I could get away with lower quality. Then I just move on to the next job until they need something else and any issues like this simply go away. If they have a problem with my attitude or the way I work, it doesn't matter as there will always be someone willing to work with me and I never do something so inextricably bad as to attract a bad reputation, I always seek 3rd party opinions and generally find agreement that there are occasionally bad customers.

Unfortunately in this case that seems to be the company you work for and so I would not tolerate that for 2,3,5... years. It's not worth it. You need to find a company that respects your work ethic and supports your emotional state as well probably by just making things more tolerable and providing benefits, which can be achieved in a number of different ways. It's not your fault that the company chooses not to reward hard work or support you with stress related work performance or health issues, it is absolutely in their interests to do that for the long-term viability of the workforce and the company's overall market performance and quality of talent.

Staydead you need to get a new job. Start looking now. Personally I'd say look for a position at a bigger company. One with a serious HR department and not one where you will get hounded by the owner.

Where ever you end up my friend, you will do well! From the sounds of things you have a great aptitude for what you do!

Yeah but if a private company runs it they will find efficiency the public sector can't and market forces will ensure the service is truly fit for purpose.

I start a new job on Monday, having spent three months out of work due to being made redundant just before Christmas (along with 4000 others on the same day). A strange mix of 'can't wait' and 'dreading it' as it's a role I haven't done before, although I have done other roles which bring quite a bit to the new job.

I genuinely think I've strawberry floated up my life. All the jobs I've applied for this week and I've heard nothing. I don't get it.. Gonna go to an agency in April but I'm just completely perplexed that I've had no luck whatsoever.

Maybe worth getting someone else to have a look over your CV?

Tragic, is there any reason why you can't handle some people's self employed accounts and Ltd company contractors etc alone?

If you really invested yourself in someone's business challenges you could charge well.

No-one wants to do accounting, in that sense it's the easiest pitch in the world.

It's almost April 1. Expedient people are going to want their accounts made up for the tax year in advance and look at efficiencies, you could probably charge hundreds just for a single report on already compiled year-end accounts..

You'll be fine. Just keep applying and keeping trying. Eventually you will find something and will look back at this time and laugh that you thought your life was strawberry floated.

I cleared the air with my boss from the other day yesterday. I went up to his office for 10 minutes and had a frank chat with him. I told him why the accusations people had made against me were completely untrue, why, and how I have been deliberately trying to do the best job I possibly can not only to avoid trouble but also make the office better for everyone else (less tickets for everyone else). I explained that if I wanted to harm the business there is no way in hell I would be putting in the effort I am, because I could just stop answering calls and doing tickets if I really wanted to harm the business.

He basically promised that there is no chance in hell that the company can even begin to think about losing me. I explained that I felt like someone was deliberately targetting me to try and get rid of me and he said that I should relax and not worry, because even if someone was trying it would never happen. I can't explain it properly anymore, but basically he said he's happy with me. I asked him how I could stop whoever the people are of accusing me of things and he basically just said before you say anything just make sure that there is no way in hell that anyone has a chance of misconstruing what I'm saying (which I think what is happening, people are twisting me words) and just said keep doing what you're doing as you're doing a good job.

I left his office and felt immediately better. I'm really glad I spoke to him. I'm still going to watch my back, but at least I know he understands that I'm not doing the things I'm being accused of. He also said thanks for talking to me, because I think it made him worry less that someone was out to bring down his business from the inside (I still find this prepostorous, but whatever) I got the best night sleep I've had in ages last night as well.

That’s good news, but I’d still keep an eye on other opportunities, you never know if it’ll flare up again or if that boss will be replaced with one of the arseholes.

Yeah I would still look to leave, this sort of gooseberry fool always comes back and even if the owner isn't a banana split management can easily strawberry float things up as a twat manager will always keep a wall between the staff and the owner selling their version of everything in both ways so they are in control.

I'm glad you were able to smooth things over with such candidness Qikz, that takes a lot of confidence. In the worst case scenarios I often feel that honesty is the best policy and there's a degree of sales as well. It was worth trying before jacking it in. It doesn't always work though, as some people will just make crap up to make you miserable and try to work you out of the company. I hope you don't experience that.

That's what I'm doing. Trouble is nothing else has come up that looks better.

That’s not a problem, you have a job and can take your time. If something comes up that you like the look of then go for it, otherwise just hide your time.
