I know I've mentioned being ill a lot, but I'm genuinely worried about something. I went in today to work, lasted about 3 hours before my boss said go home and get better. This is all well and good and I'm glad I could come home, but I'm really worried about my wages this month. I've only been off 2 (and now about 2 and a half) days and I'm really worried how it's going to affect my wages.

According to my contract I only get SSP and no more than that, but I don't really understand how it works and was never taught about it. I've only actually taken 2 days off sick in my entire 2 years prior before so I never noticed anything, but I should be fine right? I'm worried that if I get SSP for a week them I'm not going to be able to afford my rent/bills at the end of the month. God I feel so stupid.

You get no sick days? Just straight on to SSP?

SSP is like £90 a week - but IIRC it's only after youve been off work for few days in a row ...

See, this is what I don't get. This is what it says in my contract:

There is no contractual sickness/injury payments scheme in addition to SSP. Any additional payments which may be made will be at our absolute discretion

I don't get what this means at all. Does that mean nothing in addition to SSP on longer term sickness breaks?

I guess asking you guys isn't exactly the best way of doing this because you won't know either, but maybe you'll be able to work out the wording.

SSP only kicks in if you're off ill for 4 days in a row.

You can get £89.35 per week Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) if you’re too ill to work. It’s paid by your employer for up to 28 weeks.

You need to qualify for SSP and have been off work sick for 4 or more days in a row (including non-working days).

You can’t get less than the statutory amount. You can get more if your company has a sick pay scheme (or ‘occupational scheme’) - check your employment contract.

From the sounds of your contract the company can, at their discretion, still pay you if you're off ill which they may do if you've been off for too short a time to qualify for SSP. You'll need to discuss it with your line manager/HR department to get a clear answer.

Check with your HR team/line manager.

Sounds like they're ok with days here or there but would be protected in long term sickness or repeated (if your off every Monday for example)

But that's just an opinion

One thing I guess is my bosses really like me, so I don't think they'd do anything to deliberately strawberry float me over pay wise. Especially given the fact he straight up told me to go home and get better.

We don't technically have anyone who does HR and the person who does Payroll is one of our bosses wife. :dread:

Don't tell them you're sleeping with the boss.

I though you worked for HMRC for some reason

Ask the boss then, if it is your first time being off ill like this they will understand.

Odds are it will be fine, if not as Hexx says get on your knees and suck it up, but don't tell his wife.

Don't tell him you're giving the blowie first though, that'll just make it weird. Just walk over, and without bending your knees rotate your upper body at the hips until it's parallel to the ground, undo his fly with your teeth and go at it.

SD, no need to panic. Your boss seems like a cool guy, ask him, if you haven't got HR, about sick pay and what the situation is. It will clear it all up and put your mind at ease.

I should have expanded on that.

He told me to "go home, rest up and get better" - I offered to work from home and he said "no, just rest!"

I did the sensible thing and emailed my boss with my concerns. He said he's never deducted someones pay before for being ill and he certainly wouldn't start with me so I shouldn't worry. I really do love my company.
