There's nothing worse than an organisation that doesn't (a) trust its workforce or (b) hire appropriately so that they can trust them. It doesn't increase productivity at all. Good pay, creative opportunities, feedback and recognition does.

Some management people are truly Victorian in their approach to encouraging productivity but it also gives them an opportunity to exercise and justify their own bellowing salaries to shareholders (including themselves if they are managing directors/shareholders but especially if they don't have any shares).

My company, albeit in a different directorate, just hired a company for a 16 week period to come in, assess how long tasks should take and use that data to assess how productive employees are with each working day. That statistic gets put up on a whiteboard in either red or green according to whether you were -/+ 100%. Naming and shaming at its most blatant.

Of course this only applied to those on the bottom rung and nobody in a managerial or supervisory position.

I worked in a place that had a time management system, they offered flexi time so they wanted to track that you did your 39 hours a week of "work". All it really meant was people were clocked in for 39 hours a week and they got their work done at some stage during the week. There was no incentive to take on more work or put in extra time to help someone else, as long as your work was done and you were in the building the required amount of time it was all good.

They had some rules to the flexi time, you had to be in the office 5 days a week between 10 and 3 and you were required you to take a lunch break of at least 20 minutes during the day. This meant the place was a ghost town by half 3 on a Friday, everyone had their hours done earlier and had gone home. It also meant you could take a 2 hour lunch and be paid for it, just go clock out but go back to your desk for 20 minutes, then on your way out the door for your actual lunch youre actually clocking back in.

Easily the worst environment Ive worked in, it was fun but it was a nightmare for actually being productive.

The weird thing is the disconnect between that part of the business and everyone else. From the ad infinitum survey results almost all other areas of the business are happy, myself included. AFAIK this isn't bring rolled out around the rest of the business, just the customer facing side.

That's probably because dealing with customers in one of the biggest timesinks.

Anyway, some managers I've worked with make the weakest time-based decisions and blame everyone else for not being properly informed how long it would take to do something they should know about. The way some managers just will stuff and don't care if it strawberry floats everything up really pisses me off.

Congratulations and condolences in equal measure you two.

Business is slow but still have stuff to do. Got a request for an internship today which really came as a surprise as I'm self employed and just make myself look like a company. :lol:

I could actually use some help from time to time, being completely alone all the time, but I am based in a tiny spare room in a rented 2 bed house. :lol: how the strawberry float could I make that work. Interesting idea though, it may be am opportunity to set my horrible experience with an internship right, and actually teach them loads of stuff.

So I'm halfway through the first week of my four week notice period, and even though I was initially genuinely torn on whether to accept the new offer or not, I am now absolutely certain it was the right idea to make the jump. Not only are they using a contractual technicality to avoid paying me a promised bonus to spite me for leaving, the new software platform (I work in operations at a wealth management firm) we've just migrated to is panning out to be utterly terrible in every way. I've spent a lot of time the past couple days reading complaint emails from clients and honestly I am finding the whole situation absolutely strawberry floating hilarious.

Has anyone got any tips for leaving the role you're currently in to a role within a totally different sector or job type ?

I work in customer services and have done for about 15 years and if I approach agencies or put my CV online, I get approached for call centre and admin type roles but I'm ready for a change.

I feel some of the skills I have are transferable and I'm a quick to learn new things but have no idea what I want to do.

I'm currently stuck in an administrative role on good money but no room for progression and the job just doesn't challenge me anymore.

Maybe aim for a company that has a customer service/ admin role, but other roles you'd hope to move to down the line. Not quick way of doing it, but kinda worked out for me.

Avoid agency's and posting your CV online. Make sure you apply individually and tailor your CV to match the job description. Recruiters can see thorough a 'blanket' and it will show that you have put effort it.

Also less is more.

Long story short but I'm so angry with work at the moment that I can feel it in my stomach as if it had a physical form. Our management accountant is getting the sack and the CEO has gone straight to the youngest, least experienced employee in the office and offered to personally train him to be the next management accountant. So what, my three years of accountancy studies and 8 years of work experience means nothing to the company? In less than 2 months I'll have all the qualifications needed for a management accounting role and they give it to someone with nothing but 2 years work experience? I don't know if I'm over reacting but I'm absolutely fuming. At the moment I'm thinking that as soon as my studies are done, I should hand my notice in to leave by the end of the year. Clearly I'm not going to get anywhere staying here. It's just a massive kick in the teeth.

That's really shitty Tragic.

I'd look for something else as soon as your studies are completed. They don't care about you, move on and find a company that will value you.
