I remember this sort of thing when I worked in an office, I would describe these people (and the sort of people SlayerX is complaining about) as "freeloaders". Normally "strawberry floating freeloaders". It does usually get noticed though so take some comfort in knowing it doesn't end well.

I would like to share your outlook but they have worked here 5 years or more i haven't been on the team long but get the impression this has always just slipped under the radar.

Manager are pretty busy so i feel like this is being exploited to the max.

For me the issue is that the people doing it are shift workers, so 7-7, but the manager is 9-5 so never around when they're starting/finishing so it's much harder for it to be noticed.

As long as they get all of their work done, who cares?

You're well within your rights to bring it up. Tell your manager it's affecting your motivation and make reference to any fairness policy your organisation champions.

I've seen a few positions which are earmarked for those with disabilities and I'm in a bit of a moral dilemma. I've got a serious liver disease which often leaves me feeling exhausted, and Crohn's disease which hasn't responded to conventional treatment and means I have to gooseberry fool up to nine times a day. Which is also pretty exhausting. I've never registered for disabled but with these conditions obviously could. I'm not sure if I can bring myself to do it though; for one thing I've always seen myself as able-bodied despite the problems and I think I'd feel like a dick working alongside folk in wheelchairs or whatever while I'm muscle-bound and outwardly looking sprightly.

On the other hand I do worrry that if I don't mention it the 30 mins + in the bathroom and exhaustion that occurs many days will look pretty pathetic, or will just look like laziness.

I've got a good friend with Crohn's (among other things) and she may be fine one day and then is knackered the next. She's registered disabled as she can't manage a job with how her health conditions affect her life.

Be honest. Hidden disabilities are much more understood by people nowadays (although there's still much to be done). They must make reasonable adjustments for people with disabilities, but if they don't know you have a problem they will think it's piss taking. I'd actually consider using it in the interview as to get wherever you are now with a disability demonstrates mental strength, commitment, tackling adversity. All that gooseberry fool that's really hard to formulate an answer to in job applications! Basically if life deals you a couple of duff cards, make sure you play them wisely.

I think most companies pay by the hour, not the task. Who here runs out of work during the day?

That's just it there not getting work done, the sheet they hand in on a night suggests so but work have no way of checking ab individuals productivity.

If they could tell they would be strawberry floated as most days they do enough work for about an hour in a 7 hour work day !

Who here is hourly paid? Most of us are given an annual salary.

I waste a lot of time at work (as you might have been able to tell ;) ) but my work all gets done and gets done well in advance of the set target dates. I often take on other peoples work on top of my own if somebody is out of the office or is struggling.

I might not technically work the hours per week that I am supposed to, but I do more than my fair share. If other people are so disorganised that they can't fit in a few hours of GRcade amongst their work, then that is their problem, not mine.

I agree with this. In fact, it's even company policy. As long as you're doing all the work in a good timeframe to a good standard, they don't mind if you procrastinate to relax sometimes.

They've even said it's perfectly fine to take a 5 minute break every hour if we need to on a really stressful day.

It's company policy to browse GRcade during the working day?

The best way to waste time is to go for a cigarette break, then browse GRcade as soon as you come back. Add in a long toilet break and the hours just fly by. :datass: 8-) :toot:

I think you know what I mean in that people are paid to work a full day, not to complete specific tasks. Therefore unless people run out of work, they don't get all of their work done. Which means companies are getting less than what they are paying for.

That all depends on what work you are doing. In my company, we do all have set work, we are expected to be here for a certain number of hours per week. If I complete my work and help others out with their work, then I am not going to feel too guilty about messing around on here during work hours.

I assume you are not at work at the moment btw? ;)

I am at work, but I normally do 50-60 hours per week so if I spend an hour a day (which is very rare these days) looking at the interweb, I can do so with a very clear conscience. Right this moment I'm on a conference call and typing on my phone, literally multi tasking.

For my workplace, part of the job for the people who are turning up late/leaving early is to respond to support tickets raised into their respective group work queues, which could come in at literally any time, having been logged either manually or by automated monitoring systems. It's not a case of "They come in and have Task X to do and not much else", they're supposed to be there just incase something comes in as well as dealing with whatever Task X has been given to them by their manager. By arriving late/leaving early then a potentially critical incident could go without being seen which in turn diverts it to their on-call rota, which is a team in a different office.

Not paying attention during a conference call, not giving 100% commitment to the companies needs while representing them on a call. Justifies this by mentioning he is in the office for 50-60 hours a week, even though he has been seen going to the toilet, eating and hydrating himself.

3/10 - I'd sack you and blacken your name so badly that you would never work again!

Actually, I was waiting for the call to start, and it was internal so no potential customer damage anyway.
