Depends how far - 100s of flying miles is unreasonable.

If it's "not that far" it might tell them you're not commuted to working for the company.

Would it be your commute as well? Or are you planning to relocate. If commuting again makes them wonder how long you'd stick to a commute you're avoiding.

Well yes, it's better to ask for a Skype interview rather than travel 100s of miles for a first interview.

Which is what I said - but since we don't know where he is now - we don't if he's talking 10, 50, 100 miles to Manchester.

That was referring to previous job offers. Not the one he's asked about now.

Finally got another interview offer yesterday for a job I really like the sound of but it's south of Manchester (and the pay's dire) so I've asked if I can do it by Skype/FaceTime to save me traveling down for a potentially pointless trip. Is this a big no-no?

Hexx is bang on, I'm back in Britain now - in Edinburgh but obviously I'd be relocating rather than commuting if I got the job. I told them how much I want the job and they've said Skype's fine thankfully.

Congratulations man, I'm aware of your situation. Speculative is often the best as it immediately demonstrates you've researched and targeted that company to work with, instead of being "matched" by a recruiter - plus, they won't have to pay them a "finders fee".

Whether or not the contract is extended, I would strongly recommend fostering a good relationship, with the possibility of contracting for them later down the line.

I wonder if you've considered revisiting freelancing, but this is a great site for learning how to actually make money doing it: https://doubleyourfreelancing.com/

I met the guy at a conference yesterday and while obviously he focuses on educational business stuff for freelancers now, it's good to know that there really are a lot of resources out there for how to make a (much more than decent) living doing it. There are many lessons that you don't have to learn the hard way.

It basically comes down to whether you can be arsed to be a businessperson or not, and no, you don't have to spend all your time dealing with shitty ass clients! (Protip: people who pay more are less demanding.)

I really really really dont want to do freelancing again. Contract work yes if I have to (and I do) but i got tired of the businessperson side of it.

Grats Addy though. It's something while you look for something more preferable at the very least

I really really really dont want to do freelancing again. Contract work yes if I have to (and I do) but i got tired of the businessperson side of it.

Fair enough, it's not for everyone. I run a product business now anyway, I hardly do any consulting.

Congrats, Ad7, been keeping up to date on your situation and glad it's at least temporarily sorted out. Can't imagine how I would feel if I became unemployed.

Well, next week will be the first time in over three weeks that both my manager and the MD are in the office, so I'm finally going to ask for a raise for the position I started over a month and a half ago. It's a massive leap in responsibility, and I've been researching jobs in the area to have a rough idea of what to ask for, but I'm wondering if this is something anyone else had done before and had any advice.

Work work work work work anybody work work work work work

Been moved onto the nightshift on a different ward which is less busy. My routine so far goes, handover, make cheese on toast, smoke break, then walk down the ward once an hour to check everyone's still here until 6am when we rattle through half an hours cleaning and a few notes. I'm finishing on time, no stress at all and despite the shift being half an hour longer I'm able to sleep well and relax before work. It's pretty good but I'm sure the novelty will wear off in a few weeks when I'm bored and feel like in losing my skills. I'm also taking advantage of the total relaxed atmosphere and cramming in overtime since it's practically appearance money these days.

Though the freedom has helped in the job hunt. I've said before how I can't be arsed job hunting on my days off because I just want to relax. Well, I'm averaging 5 hours a night on applications, and it's a wonderful time of the new financial year bringing loads of opportunity. So hopefully I'll actually find my way out before it all goes to gooseberry fool again.

I've got this job interview tomorrow but after spending the day through in Glasgow yesterday I think I'd really prefer to work there instead. Will try my best anyway but hopefully something semi-decent comes up in Scotland, actually enjoying being back for once.
