If the place is a shithole you'll hate the job. Place I just left was an absolute dump.

Start my new job today :toot:

On the other hand, I've always seemed to find that progression in the NHS is easier once you've got a foot in the door, and the sooner you're in, the sooner the benefits start accruing.

Depends just how much you're going to dislike the job...

I'm gunna hold out for another post. There's always plenty going. I'm happy enough for the moment and know that when things go gooseberry fool at my current place I'll not like it but I can manage it. Something more appropriate will turn up. Even a low grade job in a specialty I'm more interested in would suffice to get into the NHS again. I think the double of less responsibility with an area I really don't care for is too off putting to be worth it.

I hopefully start with the NHS soon, and I was told by staff there that it's very much a 'foot in the door' sort of deal too. Hopefully I get a start date, been out of the game for about 4 1/2 years.

Just sent off an enquiry to the prince's trust about potentially getting a grant to set up a business. This can only end well! :toot:

I really do enjoy my job at the NHS, but the management are colossal bellends. Nothing particular they've done today, just generally.

My wife works for our local council and says the upper management are colossal bellends there as well.

Seems putting idiots in charge within the public sector is par for the course.

Wow good move considering you're pretty set afaik.. I need to read your PM.. let me know if you need any advice, I passed the launch panel with flying colours.

Still not working hard enough towards my goals, currently updating a year of accounts, but still.. I have a business, aye? :slol:

Had it confirmed to me that there's no budget to create a role for me, despite the fact that my department do seem to appreciate and value my work. Means I'll be coming to the end of my time at my grad scheme without a permanent position.

In two minds about it. On the one hand I am gutted because I really like my team / job right now, and on the other I'm kind of glad because the commute is atrocious and my work life balance is non existent.

Playing the application game now, which is atrocious.

I thought the entire point of graduate schemes was to invest in training and create more reliable hiring and suitable placements for the candidates to form a long term career opportunities/retained talent?

Oh well lol just work for wherever, then. It's their money. Other employers will be very pleased they don't need to train you.

I guess it feels like a 2/3. Could go up to 3/3 over the next couple of years, I think.

Your pay for doing a PhD is a hell of a lot better than mine - I've had to work full time dealing with complaints in a call centre to fund my masters and PhD, and the considerable downside is that my lack of funding actually makes me a less desirable candidate for academic jobs at the end of it.

As for work itself is say I'm a 0/3 for both. My workmates in paid employment are all right, they're mostly genuinely decent people who I like but they're of the sort who don't really get what the uni work is all about and don't think I should be as tired as I am all the damn time from doing essentially two full time jobs.

I swear to god if I hear someone tell me that I just have to pull my socks up and work a little bit harder one more damn time I think I'll break down in the middle of my crappy open plan office. The work itself is tedious, as I guess most jobs dealing with the public are, and we definitely don't get paid enough for the job that we do.

Uni I'm a definite 0/3. I don't get paid at all. I can't be involved with the faculty because I have to work at my actual job four and a half days a week and the one time I did try, I embarrassed myself so badly I genuinely haven't been able to go back in for over a year.

My supervisors have fairly major issues in their personal lives at the moment and haven't been able to look at draft work, which I've been slow to send in because, again, I'm working 30-35 hours a week and often can't face going home to type up a 15,000 word chapter on Lyndon B Johnson's interactions with the press in 1966. It's not fulfilling work, and it's not even the history I'm interested in. I've been doing this for nearly five years and I've missed three graduation deadlines, it's absolutely scunnering - I don't know how I got here.

Not really sure why I posted this. I'm starting to get quite bitter about the whole process. I've applied for a job with Glasgow uni lecturing in American History but truthfully I'm not qualified yet because I don't have the PhD. I should be able to teach in history as a GTA at two of the Glasgow universities next year at least so that will earn me a bit of cash and is much more fulfilling a role than any of the other shite I'm doing right now.

So did I. I totally appreciate that we shouldn't just be handed jobs, and there should be an expectation for us to apply internally and create a ~talent pipeline~, but on the other hand it's not like I'm a dud and they created *this* placement for me - and from my last one to one I've done pretty well despite being messed around a bit. But like I said I'm not really hung up on it - I don't like the direction the company is going (cuts cuts cuts), my fuel bill is £300 a month and I spend at least 2 hours a day in the car (if I leave at 7am and stay until 6pm; if I don't do overtime, the traffic is worse) - it's not for me, I want a shorter commute or at least one I can do by public transport.

Plus, the department I work in has gone from ~120 heads to ~60, with all signs pointing to more redundancies, it wouldn't be sensible to stay there if they offered me something anyway. It's stressful as it stands and the workload is pretty stupid. I could do internal applications and move to another area (outside of consumer sales/retail) but I'm nowhere near interested enough to want to.

Second interview tuesday :dread: for a still low-paying role but in a company with much better (as in any) progression and training opportunities, shorter hours, more holiday and more personally interesting work than the drudgery i do now, so i'd be more willing to stick this out than hop again in a year's time. The company i work for now has almost no upward mobility; a few entrenched managers who can't go up either so the baseline staff have a pretty high turnover - i've been there less than six months and at least half the people i knew when i started have gone. Trying not to get my hopes up and keeping on looking for other jobs should this not work out.

How many days off a year do you get? I get 36days including all the fixed ones like Bank Holidays, Easter, Christmas etc.

Recently on a trip to HK my cousins and friends in Hong Kong and Japan only get 12 days excluding the fixed ones. So thats like less than half of the 25 that we get. They explained to me how it is difficult for them to go on any long holidays.

Then yesterday I was speaking to a friend and he gets 50 days off a year because he works for a German company in the UK.
I think I need to start looking into German companies now

I get 40 including bank holidays, although we all got a bonus 3 this year 8-). The amount of leave is one of the few good things about the job.

Because of my 4 on 4 off shift pattern I get around the region of 185-190 days a year off.

Putting in 4 days holiday = 12 days off.

If I exclude my 'natural' 4 days off since I guess they techincally count as weekends, and instead count just off shifts where I've used some holidays, and 'maximise' that by never taking consecutive shifts off, it comes out at approximately 72 days off.

It's very well boasting about you enjoying the way your shift patterns can work with time off, but the point of saying how much leave you get in a year is that you're saying how much paid time off you're getting. So even if you get 12 days off for using 4 days holiday, you're still only getting paid for 4 of those 12 days. If I take 5 days paid leave, I have 9 days off. This sounds worse until it's reworded as you get 33% of that time paid, but I'll get 55% of mine. Hell, if free time is your primary concern then just go part time.
