It is sometimes like that. I could never quite reconcile whether I should accept that there is an hour or so of not sure what is going on and then making up an extra hour, sometimes I would work into the evening which was stupid really. I had loads of issues. Hopefully your manager is competent.

It'll be interesting to say least, but be prepared to do lots of "research" and problem inventing when the truth is someone has forgotten to manage you

I'm getting tired of working shifts, and work have just accepted a new pay deal that means we get no premia for working weekends (ie 12 and 13 hour shifts from friday night right through to Monday morning). We've had a basic pay rise in the gross pay to cover it, but its now unfair. People who do monday to friday, earlys and lates 7-8 hour shifts (eg 0530 am to 2pm) will earn the exact same as me, where as I work 13 hour nights and many weekends.

I'll try to get moved to a different location in April when it comes in, but I'm not hopeful, problem is (well maybe not a problem) it's still the best pay for my skill set. If I wanted to move into a different profession I'd have to take a pay cut, or go live in London which I really don't want to do. We'll see how things progress and I'll make my decision on life when I return from a 4 month work placement in May. I just know that when I'm sat there on a friday night working away this time next year it'll all feel a bit like 'why the strawberry float am i here doing this?' .

Shift work is bad for my mental state anyway and I can't even go to a pilates class on a Wednesday evening i've been trying to get to for about 6 weeks now due to work. (for my posture im trying to fix it). Maybe this is the kick in the arse I need to get a nice monday to friday role, HQ is in Exeter and I like it down there, problem is, that's what everyone will be thinking.

Just say you can no longer do shift work due to religious commitments.

And if they start asking questions just say that you feel you are being unfairly picked of because of your religious beliefs and that you will take it up with HR.

And if HR start asking questions, just say you don't feel comfortable talking about it.

Watch as all your problems disappear.

I'm in a pickle.

I am currently in France, living with my girlfriend for the last month of a three month sabbatical from a job I strawberry floating loathe. Long situation short, I have two options:

- Quit my job in the UK, handing in my notice upon my return. Relocate to France from Jan 18
- Return to England. Continue at my job but look for other employment in the UK.

I know what I want to do, get the strawberry float out of the UK, but I'm utterly terrified of doing this. I'd be leaving behind my friends, the little life I'd built up and...meh, an average wage. But I have no idea what I'd be doing in France. I'm trying to set myself up as a freelance copywriter but the going is slow. My partner reckons she can get me an admin job if I want but it's not guaranteed.

If I stay in the UK I run a real risk of losing my relationship (my girlfriend is stuck in France until at least February) and spending the rest of my life in dead-end admin jobs that pay well enough for me to ignore the deepening crater of despair within my soul. But it's safe, or at least safer.

I'm genuinely terrified of risking everything to move out here, but I'm equally as terrified of giving up an opportunity to actually make something of myself.

Urgh.

Feel the fear and do it anyway.

What is the worst thing that would happen if you moved to France? you have to come back?

Do it Taf! we believe in you.

Haha! Thanks. I'm certainly leaning that way.

Worst thing is I could be without out a job semi-long term, which would force me to return home when the money runs out. I'd then need to set myself up again in the UK, meaning I'd have to take another awful admin job probably at a much lower pay than what I'm currently on.

It's pretty unlikely that I'd have no jobs for the time needed for my saving to fall away though. I've already spoken to a teaching agency that could probably get me some parttime work. I think my big fear is the change in lifestyle I'd have to endure. No more casually pissing money away on games or gadgets, more budgeting etc.

Seems like a small price to pay now I've written it down.

Just do it. I was a freelance copywriter for a while and it's seriously difficult to make enough to live on. You'll have to really put the hours in.

My pal decided one night she wanted to leave work and the next day had an au pair slot lined up in Italy to start three weeks later. Okay she strawberry floated her finances and struggled a bit when she got back but she got a tan and loved it. The time out was cool but I think she liked braving it and just doing what she wanted for a bit.

Got an interview with an addictions team next week. Obviously as I've struggled to get out for the last year everything seems to be going to pot and we may be looking at complete management restructure that could make the place a viable business that I'd enjoy working for again.

Yes do it TAF, it's really that simple. Don't worry about it don't worry about what you're leaving behind, have a go, see how it goes and make the big move. My brother lives in France and has been there for about 6 years now. Think he loves it out there.

Taf, I assume you don’t have any real commitments (kids, mortgages etc) in the UK?

If not, then what have you got to lose?

Yeah go for it. Hell if it doesn't work out and you have to come back you will have experience already for work so can use that and if it works out awesome!
Go for it free yourself of this country and be free!

They're taking away our desk phones at work, and we're getting Skype calls and wearable headsets. :|

I started a secondment about 5 weeks ago and I was offered a permanent position yesterday :)

I played it cool and asked to give a reply today and accepted but it appears that department I left are now putting up a fight for me to go back when the secondment ends.

How exactly does that work? Does the company bid against itself in order to get you into the department that wants you most?

Sounds great, just leave them to it.

So I missed an interview today because traffic/Anungs dad can't drive/sat nav being a bitch. Drove around for an hour until I had to actually go back to work. Quite upset but relieved to find I have an interview for a bigger better job. Like, up to £40K a year job. Bonus points for 'networking' since my managers wife runs the service and is BFFs with my interviewer.

If only our last meeting wasn't me incredibly drunk at her wedding.
