Could anyone recommend a good point and shoot camera? My uncle is asking for advice on a camera but I have no idea what he wants, he says he wants something that is good quality and will last a life time, but I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be interested in a full blown DSLR. I haven't bought a digital camera in years though so am a bit out of the loop and would appreciate any advice.

If he dose want a DSLR though would this be any good?

There's a hell of a deal I found on hotukdeals. Basically 2 amazon promotions running at the same time for the Canon 600D. One gives you the camera, another free Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens, which you can also claim cashback from on the Canon website (about £30).

There's also one where you pick the 600D, and 2 free accessories (some tripods, cases and SD cards). You can add this to the previous promotion and still get them and the lens free, with cashback.

Some have said they've managed to get £90 cashback from Canon, so will have to look into that.

Ok well I talked to him and he said a DSLR is beyond what he needs, so any good suggestions for a point and shoot?

I'm considering buying a camera in the next few months to replace my EOS 550D. I'm considering switching to a micro 4/3 camera and I'm kind of torn between Panasonic's GH4 and Olympus's EM1.
The EM1 mainly because of the internal image stabilization (which would be really helpful, especially for old manual focus lenses, which I like using a lot, and it just looks like magic when used in video). It's also, I've gathered, just a great all around stills camera.
The GH4 because it's cool, does 4K video (and the GH series generally does video amazingly well) and has a screen that both tilts and swivels.

Might be better idea to ask here, I'm not sure what I should be looking for.

I'm after small camera that I can fit in my pocket (with case preferable) as I like to take pictures when I'm out and experienced something little odd. I've been using Iphone for that but of course, the quality is terrible so they weren't really worth sharing other than small mention to my friends. So I'd like one with better quality overall and generally easy to carry around as well using USB to charge. I'm fine with either USB to transfer data to PC or SD card; I'd want it to be cheap if possible, otherwise I'm fine with any that's £100 odd - are there any cameras I should keep my eye on come August?

I have a newbie question:

What are the optimal settings for general purpose DSLR photography?

I admit I use the Auto function a lot, last year I did have some good settings but these were somehow deleted.

I don't feel the Auto function does what I want half the time.

I started off learning with an 'Aperture Priority' mode. That means you basically choose which f-stop you'd like to use (f. 2.0 being very wide open and ideal for low light situations or where you want a really shallow depth of field, f.8 being ideal for sharpness and landscape shots where you want everything in focus).

Depending on your camera, it will show you the shutter speed it chooses for you depending on available light. Pay attention to the shutter speeds it chooses and eventually you'll start to get an idea for what shutter speeds to use for any given situation, combined with ISO speed.

If that sounds complicated don't be put off. It's a surprisingly easy way to learn.

Looking to buy a camera. Got a budget if about £150. I'd like dslr but these are obv expensive. Not as adverse to buying second hand since it's a first and I'm trying to get used to it. Preferably not too big or heavy.

Looking to get some decent pics in Japan. Shots of Mount Fuji in the sunrise, bright lights at night and the like. Would like portraits and decent quality pictures for general use.

Looking at the lumix gf5 as it was recommended by a blogger with awesome shots. Any advice or recommendations. If express delivery is available it'll be awesome cuz I wouldn't mind taking it to Belgium on Thursday if I'm getting one anyway.

It's cool. Found that gf5 on eBay for £150. Gunna try it out in Belgium this weekend. Looking forward to it.

You can't really go wrong there. I took all my photos in Japan on an lx3, which is very well regarded, I have some incredible landscapes and lets in a lot of light.

See how you get on doing night shots with the lens you got and see if you can get it down to f2 or even lower if you want good night shots, which is pretty much essential. Mine were in Kyoto mostly. Some of them were even in pitch blackness aside from the lanterns in an old temple turned public drinking party.

Yeah you can use shutter priority but anyone will struggle to hold anything longer than 1/20th and that's really pushing it depending on the optical image stabilisation (which is amazing in the higher end lumix compacts / micro 4/3rds that you have). It beats even most slr set ups.

I sometimes held as long as 1/6th of a second or even 1/3.2 but that was crazy fluke stuff to get night shots. Always on iso 400.

Can anyone recommend a compact camera that will take DSLR quality shots? I'm going away at the end of the year and want a good camera but as I'll be cycling I don't want the weight of a proper DSLR. I was thinking I may just get a gopro as I'd like to take video too but it might be limited for stills.

I can get a Canon EOS M for a good price but the lack of a proper view finder puts me off it a little.

I'm in the market for a new camera. I want a DSLR and have a budget of around £300 odd. Any recommendations? I guess I'm a beginner but I'm not gooseberry fool at taking photos. I just want them to be the best possible without spending a fortune.

My Nikon D3200 has been great. I think it's been superseded now - D3300 - which seems to be going for around the £300 mark.

Sample shots (res is lower as these are from Facebook)

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Seems to get quite good reviews for an entry level.
