I just ordered myself a Samsung WB500 and I'm really looking forward to seeing what it can do.

YOU WHAT?! 200 QUID FOR THAT?!

Why Peter? Why? Samsung don't make good cameras. Look how damn ugly it is. If you wanted to spend 200 quid, at least you could have gone for a Fuji or Canon. It's not even an opinion thing, the Fujis and Canons not only have the better picture quality but the better features and build quality.

I'm not bothered about what it looks like as it's a camera not a fashion accessory and from the reviews I have seen it's an excellent camera.

I got this for Xmas:

And I love it. I didn't want my mum to break the bank, so it was £100 (less now) and will definitely suffice while I decide how seriously I want to take photography. I wanted the big zoom, didn't need a crazy MP count (it's 8.0), so this is perfect.

What reviews were you reading exactly? I wouldn't trust a review that makes you choose a Samsung over Fuji, Canon or Nikons. It's not even about being fashion accessories, you blew 200 quid on a camera that's inferior to a cheaper and more robust camera from a different brand who have been in the market for much longer than Samsung :|

It's your choice, I'm assuming you're going to take this with some offence because I'm berating you for splashing out on a Samsung, but the bottom line is that Samsung is gooseberry fool in cameras. the review itself may have rated the camera well, but I still think whoever must have reviewed it was out of their mind or they were reviewing it with an agenda because if you were to make comparisons to other cameras, the Samsungs would not compare well.

Ok, I've phoned play and I can send it back once it's been delivered as I said it was ordered by mistake. What camera's do you recommend for £200?

First explain what you want Petey. If you order that G7, you're going to be absolutely stoked but for practicality you might not take that thing around with you everywhere.

And ignore KKLEIN, the Sony's are worse than the Samsungs for picture quality  Full of noise, poor flash, and bad colour balancing, a lot of yellow all over the place, especially in low light.

Edit: The DSCW series are also poor build quality, very cheap plastic all over it. When I was working and the DSCW series was launched I thought it was a budget range, but it seemed popular with brand obsessed customers and Sony has upped the price on the DSCW series by quite a bit in recent times.

Here let me, help.

Is the camera for occasions? You wanting to take it with you on holiday? You want to take photos that you can enlarge to huge sizes like A3 or bigger or do you want to just print at normal sizes of 6x4 inches? You carry a backpack around with you whenever you go to weddings, or holidays or even down the road to the park? You want to take pictures of scenery? You want to take pictures of people? Want to be running down the road while taking pictures? You want a viewfinder? Or do you want an LCD screen on it? You want to be able to put filters on the camera? You want to use different lenses? You want to edit the photos on computer or do you want to mess with the settings on the camera? You want it to be a point and click? You taking pictures in low light conditions? You taking pictures in very brightly lit conditions? You got bad handshake? You need an optical image stabiliser? Or do you intend to use a tripod?

Don't just go through those questions and think that's it, there's a lot more I haven't covered that only you'll know what you're going to require.

Erm...the W300 has a titanium shell coating. The only plastic on the entire thing is the battery cover.

 It's still a gooseberry fool camera.

That must be what you're paying for on the W300 though, the titanium coating, because Sony cameras sure aren't good performers

CONCLUSIONS

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W300 is a pretty impressive little digital camera. While it is clearly targeted at photo enthusiasts, with lots of user input into the exposure process and features like full manual exposure and in-camera editing (cropping, fisheye lens and unsharp mask filters, and a Real color mode), this camera also features plenty of auto mode picture making options that will appeal to neophytes and casual photographers. In short, the W300 should appeal to a broad range of users, from beginners to advanced amateurs.

The clunky menu system is somewhat irritating, but most users will quickly learn to use the camera's dedicated controls and avoid the menus whenever possible. Where the W300 really shines is as a portrait, informal portrait, environmental portrait, candid photo, and street shot picture taker. If you've ever fantasized that you were Henri Cartier-Bresson or Robert Doisneau, the W300 may be the compact digital camera for you.

Right, What I would like is lots of optical zoom as I only had 3x on safari and animals have a nasty habit of standing far away so I'd like to be prepared for anything zoomwise. Other than that I'm not sure what I need.

I think, if you have the funds, you'd be better off with an SLR.

Try the likes of Cnet, TechRadar & The Gadget Show website & choose 4 or so cameras that you like the look of & then pop along to Jessops or Comets & have a look at them for yourself.

In the compact area, C5's Gadget Show have got the Fujifilm Finepix F100 FD as the best Budget Camera (about £170).

Image

Sony's Cyber-shot W300 (gooseberry fool, indeed...) as the Best Midrange & Canon IXUS 980 IS as Luxury.

http://fwd.five.tv/gadget-show/bestbuys ... as-compact

As you want a decent zoom, the Sony is probably out as it's only got a 3x lens.
