I've used it a fair bit at work (check Facebook to see some of the photos) and I really like the photos it takes.

GF-2, two lens kit for £352.

I don't know much about the G2 but if I was going 4/3s I'd still be more interested in better glass, and 4/3s glass is pretty expensive.


Canon were selling refurbed 1100Ds on eBay for £300. Would wait until some more pop up.



It largely depends on what your needs are. My main complaint about my DSLR is that it doesn't fit in my bag at all (got a lot of books in there) in which case a GF2 and 14mm pancake would be brilliant, but it's better for pretty much everything else. I just need to know when I'm going to want it, which obviously isn't ideal.



When I'm rich I'll get both.

Boy I'm so strawberry floating glad I have bought only official lenses for my Nikon. I know they're expensive as strawberry float, but the good lenses are all compatible with the higher end models anyway, and I can see myself upgrading to a higher end Nikon when I get a little less poor.

It's my birthday soon, family want to get me some camera gear. There's nothing I really need though, I have the Lenses I'll need covered, a bag, nice memory card, rarely need a flashgun, got a tripod for home use and a borrowed gorilla pod for on the move.

Anyone got any equipment they get use out of that perhaps isn't obvious as part of every photographer's bag? Got my D3100 last year, so would be nice to add some kit this year.

Sounds like a plan. I'd be keen to see more examples of shots people have taken, too, so it's an advice thread and a showcase.

Edit: What's the best all-round entry-level software for basic manipulation and organisation of photos? If I had, say, up to 100 quid to spend? I've got a porky new PC on its way which should be able to handle anything I can chuck at it; it's just I don;t know where to start with the software stuff.

I haven't got a DSLR yet, but will do eventually, so dealing with RAW files will eventually be required.

I've tried a few, but in the end bought a Lightroom key on Ebay for about £50. It's great. Try the trial though, or you can actually use the lightroom 4 beta for free until they actually release it.

Hi,

I have a budget of three hundred pounds to buy a new camera and, frankly, I'm a bit lost. I'd appreciate any suggestions or recommendations at all.

I'm after a good quality picture (well, obviously), a decent zoom and an easy to use interface (seeing as the other half will also be using it ).

I quite like the look of the Nikon 1, but that is just out of price range at the moment, at around £380. Is there anything similar, but for less money? There's a pretty nice looking Panasonic [url](http://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-Lumix ... 987&sr=8-1[/url]) which is at £200 at the moment, and that seems like a bargain...if it's any good!

Any and all help gratefully received!

I take it you're looking for something compact, then?

The Nikon 1, apart from being rubbish, is an interchangeable lens camera. That camera you've posted is not.


There are advantages to both, and most interchangeable lens cameras (not the Nikon 1) have larger image sensors, which give better image quality and bokeh (look it up if you don't know what that is).

Compacts have the advantage of generally being a bit cheaper, not needing to change the lens, and most have a pretty good zoom range built into them.

I suppose the price restraint I have given puts me in a sort of dilemma, really. I think I could get a really top notch compact or a bottom of the range interchangeable - would you agree with that?

And given that choice, what type would you plump for?

Interchangeable.

I'd look at something like the Panasonic GF-2, then decide whether I'd want to go with the 14mm fixed lens with a faster aperture or the 14-42mm zoom.


Once again, depends what you want it for? Just a camera for holiday photos and such or more serious hobbyist photography?

Ah! That Panny looks the very thing, and it's £300 on Amazon so I'm going to go for that, I think!
