What the hell is Doctor Who?

Simply, British television's biggest drama series. It was launched in 1963, cancelled in 1989 and brought back in 2005. It's about an alien (a Time Lord) travelling with a human companion in time and space in a Police Box that's bigger on the inside, oh and when the Doctor dies, he changes his face. Since the series was revived in 2005, three actors have played the Doctor. In Series 1 he was played by Christopher Eccleston, in Series 2,3,4 and the Specials by David Tennant, from Series 5-7 by Matt Smith and from Series 8 onwards by Peter Capaldi.

Series 8

It's a bit early to make this thread isn't it? Although I spose you could say the same about the Lost one.

Yeah another great series this year. I got a few of the latest boxsets of the older episodes to replace my VHS's too recently so all is well

It's never too early for a Doctor Who thread. 8-)

I've just finished watching The Power Of Kroll in my slow crawl through The Key To Time season. It features some of the worst green screen and model work I've ever seen, and is a perfect example of how far the show has come. Personally I think even the new series is at its best when dealing with small scale stuff, but thanks to a pitiful budget TPOK is just hillarious.

It'll be busier than you think anyway, there's a Torchwood audio play coming up soon plus the filming of the new series whoch I'll keep you all updated with, granted, it won't be as busy when Doctor Who is actually on :D

Anyone picking up the William Hartnell classic "The War Machines" at the end of the month? The final shot of Harnell in the trailer is simply awesome!

I absolutely love classic Doctor Who and have a large collection of the DVD's. Takes me back to my youth of being terrified on Saturday tea-times during the 70's. I still vividly remember the big reveal of Scaroth in "The City Of Death".

That last episode was some of the worst TV in the history of the series. It was just beyond rubbish and into a whole new level of awfulness. Even a friend at work who is a die hard fan of over 20 years hated it.
The overuse of nonsense technobable to suddenly whip up miraculous ways to overpower the Daleks just lost the show all credibility. So this new human/Timelord woman can in seconds think up ways to control Daleks when the entire Timelord race could not?
I could think up better endings than that and I'm a complete idiot so why do people accept it from Dr Who?

And then there is a five part mini series I think that torchwood is pretty much dead after that hits.

Amusement under late capitalism is the prolongation of work.

Torchwood series 2 was a vast improvement over series 1 I felt. I still find the almost constant sexual references just don't suit the Who universe and spoil it but the stories in series 2 were much stronger and certainly kept me watching.

I've got all the classic DVD's released to date so I'll be picking this up. Black & White Who FTW!!

I was really looking forward to the Trial of a Time Lord boxset though, if only to see if it is as bad as its reputation. The documentaries on it should be interesting as well, seeing as it's when the wheels really started coming off the classic series.
