Is there much of a difference between, say, one of these and a proper branded one? It would be an ideal gift for my dad, y'see.

I don't know anything specific about the £40 one but a few years ago there was quite a difference between players. Something that a lot of early players suffered with is long loading times before a disc starts. I assume very few still have that problem but for £40 you never know what they've skimped on.

Richersounds sell a Toshiba Blu-Ray player for £49.95 (link).
I did a quick search for some reviews but couldn't find much other than lots of people at AVForums recommending it. One to consider anyway.

That's not a bad idea for an xmas present. Are there any good price comparison websites for blu-rays? Anything like gamestacker?

Garden State seems to be finally getting a blu-ray release :D February sometime, from what I can tell. Excite.

EDIT: Wonder if they'll have fixed the "You're mom just died" typo in the subtitles.

Sony to release Blu-ray upscaler (4k/2160p)

http://m.uk.ign.com/articles/2012/01/09 ... ray-player

Today at its press conference at CES, Sony introduced three new Blu-ray players, including the BDP-S790, which offers support for 4K resolution upscaling.

For TVs that support it, the player can upscale Blu-rays to a resolution of 3840 x 2160.

3840 x 2160, eh? Smacks of a gimmick to me. Moar HD is all well and good until you realise that there's no content at that resolution.

(Disclaimer: I don't own a HD TV, and my laptop only goes up to 1600x900.)

Depends what you mean by no content. There's nothing at a consumer level, but that would be expected since they have nothing to watch it on so who would buy it, but most films were made at that resolution or better. I think the hobbit films are being filmed at 4 times (might even be 16) that, for example. Cinema has been on 4k for decades.

I guess there is plenty of content but it's just not readily available. Would love to see 4k cinema quality scaled down on a 50/60 tv.

Edit: I think most films filmed at 32mm is actually better than 4k.

Weren't they selling colour TVs when the only content available was black & white?

Bond Films Coming to Blu-ray for 50th Anniversary

Bond girls and directors of the 007 films appeared at the Consumer Electronics Show Tuesday, as part of an announcement that all 22 James Bond films will be released by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment on Blu-ray this year. The boxed set will include more than 130 hours of bonus material.

Marking the 50th anniversary of MGM's James Bond, Fox host a panel discussion with directors John Glen (five Bond films including For Your Eyes Only and Octopussy), Martin Campbell (GoldenEye, Casino Royale) and Michael Apted (The World Is Not Enough). Bond girls Caterina Murino (Casino Royale) and Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace) were also on hand for the event, held in the Panasonic booth.

The directors discussion included a look at such clips as the iconic skiing scene from For Your Eyes Only, as well as recollections of getting involved with the franchise.

Admitted Apted: “My experience is more in documentary work and more realistic stuff. … I was petrified.”

All three directors said that while ideally they still prefer to see movies in the cinema, they are impressed with the quality with which Blu-ray reproduces films.

Recalled Glen, “I remember with early Bond movies there was a resistance to showing them on TV at all (because there would be loss of quality). TVs have improved, now we have Blu-ray. … You are seeing it in its full glory.”

The Bond set is up for pre-order at £89.99 on Amazon. The problem with Bond box sets is it will never be too long before they're out of date.

True but this is the first time they actually bothered releasing them on Blu Ray, aside from about six random films they produced on the format a while back.

Think I'll wait for the individual releases of GoldenEye and from Russia with Love

I already own Casino Royale and I don't like half of the films anyway.

Are they not being released individually too?
