My mum purchased a Blu Ray player today but no movies for it. Which are the best to go for in terms of HD quality?

Not a film, but documentaries are brilliant in HD. Stuff from Attenborough like Blue Planet and Planet Earth are great places to start to enjoy the quality 1080p brings.

Poor film, but it looks utterly incredible.

I'd recommend Band of Brothers. It's excellent value, an amazing programme, and has great HD picture quality.

Avatar, District 9 and most of your Disney Pixar movies (Especially UP) look amazing in full HD. Bladerunner, as old as it is, looks amazing too.

I just cancelled my order of that. Would have been nice to have but strawberry float Zavvi for dithering on it. Gave my money to Play.com instead for Rage on the 360.

Human Planet is also a must a buy. As much of a visual feast as Planet Earth, it sometimes even surpasses it.

Human Planet - BR - £15.99

So, I'm still the only one who finds it pretty brilliant.

Thanks guys, might pick a few of these suggestions up as a Christmas present for her. I'm certainly interested in watching Blade Runner in HD myself.

Is Finding Nemo out on blu-ray, or has it vanished from shelves? I can't get it off LoveFilm and Amazon don't have it either...

Only a commentary track as an extra but the picture and sound it meant to be pretty decent.

Thanks! I just received mine today and it came in a nice shiny silver slipcase :D
I haven't seen this film before either so looking forward to watching for the first time and in 1080p with DTS HD MA 5.1 sound

For those of you like me who like to pretend that Alien3 and Alien Resurrection were never made...

But the entire BluRay box set has been going for about £17 on Play these past few weeks. You can ignore the other films - and the box it comes in is sexual.

Surely this is the best purchase regardless of what you think of the latter two films:

And the director's cut of Alien3 is actually pretty decent. There, I said it.

Plus - they must look stunning in HD. Enjoy the visuals only. An occasional guilty pleasure indulgence. Both films have alien setpieces that are enjoyable as separate entities.

I liked 3. It just suffers from comparison from the first two masterpieces. Also - i say it again - killing Hicks and Newt strawberry floating devastated me. It really affected my connection with the story. They could have had one or both in sick bay with her - which would have, again, given weaver the chance to portray Ripley's motherly protective instincts. That pissed me off far more than the other criticisms of the film.

This.

Resurrection is pretty average but is still watchable. It just suffers from being in a series which contains two of the best sci-fi films ever and featuring this:

In the end it's still a Jean-Pierre Jeunet film so it has enough interesting aspects to stop it from being a complete waste of time.
