I know this may be old fashioned but I like the fact that monsters I faced at the start of the game have to bow down to my mightyness later in the game as if I'm still struggling against them at the end the sense of extra power just goes right out the window.
That was the sole reason I never got on with 4 and I only ever managed to play the first 10 or so hours before giving up :( .

How would you manage that whilst still maintaining the ability to explore the world freely?

What are you talking about? Plenty of RPGs have done that before.

How do they do it? I'll be the first to admit my range of experience here is pretty small.

Well, in Morrowind it meant that early on you got your ass kicked a lot or you became a skilled runner
It was a very dangerous place!

I'd prefer it if the whole world didn't scale with you, it adds to the sense of danger and exploration, keeps you on your toes and makes success feel much more rewarding.

Didn't Bethesda already do something a bit different than world level scaling in Fallout 3? I don't think they intend to go back to it.

I like them, but I'd rather it was hidden, leaving you to feed off the reaction of other characters to work out what people people think of you, rather than a sliding bar in the menus (that's how it was in Oblivion, wasn't it? Can't actually remember, it's been so long).

New engine is great - the big area to improve would be the combat. I liked it in Oblivion but it wasn't prefect and, after 4 or 5 years there is definitely scope for improvement.

If not they can shove it.

I so want to get in to these Elder Scroll games but cannot stand the flailing melee or the ranged combat that feels too loose :(

Difficulty slider to the bottom. Sneak attack with bow only. Fun.

But does that applies to consoles as well as PC's?

Will it be as buggy as the Oblivion and Fallout engines?

Well we shall have to wait and see I guess, but I doubt it will be bug free.

Why is everyone so excited about the new engine? What does it matter? It's the next game in their key franchise, so it's not like they wouldn't have updated and reworked the old engine beyond recognition.

I'm not saying there's little or no benefit to a whole new engine, but some people are acting as if it's the one thing that would make the game worth playing.

Plus every Elder Scrolls game has always been the flagship of where Bethesda is at technologically and design wise.

Yeah they did, I think it was based on areas. As in, certain areas were designed to be for higher level players than others, instead of every enemy in the world scaling based on your abilities. Definitely hoping they stick with something similar for Skyrim.

:fp: Did you play Morrowind? There were no portals there either. The portals were exclusively part of the Oblivion storyline.
