Yup. I found it especially impressive when told to spar with one of the companions it flags you as hostile to all the others around you, who then start attacking until you die, even when the guy I'm sparring with stops and says well done. Those swords flying into my face were really fun.

When you say the graphics are shoddy, how bad are we talking here? PS3-level Skyrim?

Probably. I never played the PS3 version so I can't say for sure, but there's definitely more pop-in of assets and it can be hard to make out enemies/npcs at a distance. It can be hard to make out the detail on characters until you're quite close to them as well. So there are definitely compromises in place. Animations are as good/bad as they've always been to be fair. It's the price they've decided to pay to get it at the stable framerate it needs. I imagine the PC version won't suffer quite as badly from it.

It makes up for it in terms of immersion though. The particle effects particularly, really come into their own in VR. The Move controls really help as well, especially being able to pick up and interact with objects far more naturally than other version.

It's easily the definitive version of the game for me, but as I said I expect the PC version to outclass it once it releases.

EDIT: I should add that it seems to be based on the original version of the game, not the special edition.

I played today for about an hour, I got as far as the spiders whilst escaping via the Helgen caves - then had to stop and go to bed because the feeling of nausea was coming on strong. Oh god the feeling of immersion is wonderful! Looking up to the castle towers, seeing the scale of different objects, the dragon flying overhead, the depths of the dungeons, walking down stone stairs, staring right into people's faces. Of course the graphics are gimped in comparison to the Special Edition and the VR experience means they are not very sharp, but that is compensated by the sense of immersion. I wanted to play as normal so used the DS4 but oh my that was a bad idea as it felt like a nightmare fairground ride. Playing with FOV options and slowly moving helped a bit but it became really hard when trying to move fast. Picking up items is part of normal RPG gameplay but it became a chore I wanted to avoid to minimise movement. In the end I felt a pain on the right side of my brain and thought it best I stop before being sick. My body is currently recovering and I'm going to force myself to go out to do some errands. I hope I can recover enough to try it with the Move controllers and teleport movement and hope it's not too fiddly. I really want to go back but not if it's going to make me sick. I will say this, my good/terrible experience just cements in my mind that VR is absolutely going to play a big part in the future of gaming!

Glad to hear your having fun. No sickly issues for you?

It's really gooseberry fool that VR seems to get to some people and not others.

The only time I've ever felt a bit "off" with it, is when playing something like Skyrim or Farpoint and moving forward whilst standing up. Sitting down it disappears completely.

It especially sucks that you're having to switch to teleport movement which I've never liked the idea of. Takes some of the immersion away for me. Hope you can find a comfortable setting for yourself though.

PSVR is too weak to run properly, when the visor isn’t as stupid looking and the tech has ironed out the kinks (for all vr) then I’m in.

Never played it on PS3, it might just be that its an old game that was never made for VR running at a relatively low resolution.

I'm on PS4 Pro but I haven't seen any framerate issues or anything like that, its just low quality assets especially when compared to a modern game.

Not with the settings I've got on and the way I'm playing it. Like I said I managed just over 4 hours in two separate stints yesterday and was absolutely fine.

I'm sure if I'd set it to smooth turning I wouldn't have been able to handle it.

I just booted up and smooth turning made me start feeling sick by the 2nd encounter so switched it off. To be fair, not been in VR before so this was probably a bit advanced for me just yet!

Switched to teleport and Move, put a good few hours in in that mode.

Move controllers take a lot of getting used to, having never used them before. Mainly which buttons to press when and how to scroll. Find I attack by accident when I point at stuff to interact with it. Took ages to learn how to use my power. But I had too much fun when I found the fire spell to do some fancy fire-bending, fire-breathing and the like.

Now I am new to VR, but holy hell is it scary in there. Having giant spiders and bears come at you in life-size is terrifying. I am using a bow for that exact reason (and I like that the real skill is how good I am with a bow) except then I get the fear as they run at me. I was taking shots at a deer when a wolf snuck up on me and started snarling and gnashing. Shat my pants and teleported into a river for my life. "Argh, strawberry float! No, no, no, I cannot deal with this." Funny as hell for my mate listening on comms

I am no Legolas, I am absolutely a modern 30 year old man awkwardly holding a bow in a fantasy forest shitting his pants. This is immersion.

Move controllers absolutely take some time to get used to, but they really add to the experience.

Bows are so much more fun in this version. I've never bothered with them before but they are OP as strawberry float now, as the only limit to your firing speed is how fast you can do the motion. Was really satisfied last night when I took on a load of bandits with Lydia and found one of them at the end lying face up with an arrow protruding through the front of her face.

Though I was having strange drift issues with the HUD which meant I had to keep restarting the game. Might have to look at my set up again to see if there is anything that might be affecting it.

I think it's fantastic that you can also use spells in pretty much any direction you're looking instead of being locked to facing forward as in the standard game. It's cool as strawberry float to dual wield spells and be just blasting stuff left, right and centre.

Skyrim VR has really made me want some kind of Dark Souls style 1st person melee game. The sense of place in a Dark Souls game, the twisty/layered geography and the slower, weightier combat combined with the immersion of VR would be incredible.

Just reading this gave me motion sickness!

I don't think I would be cut out for VR - much as I love the idea.
The £250 bundle with Skyrim is so tempting, but given that I've not even tried PSVR yet, it could be an expensive way to fill a bucket.

It definitely depends on the individual. The only thing I've had to stop playing because I felt physically sick was Scavengers Odyssey on the VR Worlds disc. The continually jumping and inverting the camera was just too much. I've played a bit on most everything else and things like Eagle Flight, Eve Valkyrie etc don't give me any issues even with things like barrel rolls. The main disconnect is always the motion whilst actually remaining still and so 1st person games do trigger that a little but this is generally overcome with teleportation movement. I'm currently playing Skyrim on free movement with snap turning on the move controllers and that is fine.

I think I might go for this, and 'train' myself through the motion sickness over time - like I did with Metroid Prime years ago.

Are the move controllers essential? It's another £50 to add 2.

For Skyrim?

No, but they do increase the immersion considerably.

For PSVR in general, I'd say yes. There are at least a handful of games that require them to work. I would definitely recommend them.

Game have pre-owned Move controllers for £17.99, it can be a bit hit and miss but they do take returns if they're faulty.
