She was so desperate to sound tough and bombastic when she said “This is the future within our grasp, let us seize it” but failed miserably.

May says the both way for both sides to proceed is for them to follow the approach she has set out today.

She says it is beholden on all of those involved to get there.

The negotiations will be difficult. But if they approach them in the right way, respectful and pragmatic, it can work for both sides.

May says she recognises this is not what the EU wanted. But they have to get on with it.

If they get the spirit of this partnership and negotiation right, they can make this vision happen.

That's gonna go down brilliant from a side that's procrastination, wasted time, delivered nothing but moon on a stick demands then acted outraged at lack of process.

Relationship with EU different from Norway or Canada
The UK is in a completely different relationship with the EU than Norway or Canada, Theresa May has stressed.

"That gives us an opportunity to create a partnership that is completely different," she says.

"Let's think creatively, let's be ambitious about what we can achieve."

So still no strawberry floating idea what Brexit actually is then.

Based on this speech - it's going to a deal that's exactly the same in it's benefits to us, although we can make our own rules, contribute less and pander to racist voters.

So basically exactly what it's meant since the Referendum ;)

Don't forget May delayed/cancelled negotiations to deliver what amounts to "Can I have 2+ more years to do my homework please"

Jesus Christ.

This whole "no deal is better than a bad deal" nonsense needs to be kerbstomped into oblivion. No deal is literally the worst possible deal. It'd be catastrophic for the economy.

So she's saying during the transition people any current EU rules/laws will apply, but any new ones?

They're never going to agree that

Edit Oh - we're just leaving the rule making process, but subject to the rules? TAKE BACK CONTROL

After a whole week of the press clearly stating that this speech was all about clarity and answers, she provides no clarity or answers.

She doesn't help herself does she?

May hopes EU will respond as partners and friends
Theresa May says she hopes people in Brussels, Berlin and across Europe will see her speech as the UK setting out the opportunity to work together on a strong partnership that will deepen prosperity in the EU and UK.

She hopes they will "respond in a way of partnership and friendship because that's what the UK is offering", adding that it is in Britain's national interest for the EU to continue to be strong.

Correct me if I'm wrong but shouldn't that be your starting off position, not 1/4 of the way through the process?

This speech has probably made me the most depressed I've been since the referendum result - at least up to now there has still been the (slim) possibility that someone in government knew what the strawberry float they were doing and we'd still get some sort of deal to rescue the economy, but no it really does look like we're strawberry floated.

Look, I'm sure it's a great negotiating tactic to say to your partner "We need at least 2 more years!....but you do too...right? We can have two more years? Right"

It definitely doesn't stink of desperation.

After spending months making out the EU are the enemy, now they are friends and we really should just get along!

These idiots have no idea. They thought negotiation meant being “tough”, but when that utterly failed they thought “let’s just be friends”.

The EU are going to eat these idiots alive.

You know what this, this is a process being run by a bunch of people who haven't done a business deal in the last 10 years. Business doesn't work like this anymore.
