You’re skipping a wretched hive of scum and villainy to go to Comic-Con?

I am indeed.

The rebellion before the Empire.

I think it's the pain meds I'm on!

I went to the conservative party conference once it was kind of hilarious and frustrating. I was helping the leader of the conservative humanist association put on a talk. The ultra Christian part of the party physically attacked us and tried to throw us out. We had to get security down to move them off. The British Humanist association was dicks to us until we got Richard Dawkins to talk and then they tried to make amends.

Corbyn suggested he was opposed to the UK staying in the EU single market permanently because that could stop Labour implementing its policies. (See 10.15am.) When asked for an example, he said that the government claimed EU state aide rules stopped it intervening to protect the Redcar steelworks. But Corbyn also admitted that Labour argued otherwise at the time, and that state aid rules were not enforced consistently by EU member states.

Oh...

The EU state aid rules are clear. Some nations stick to it, some don't. I believe it's up in front of the courts in terms of Italian aid for their steel industry?

Certainly in terms of Labour's nationalisation programmes, they would come into difficulty under a capitalist club.

What is it about the EU, Blue Eyes, that makes you want to be in it so badly?

I don't want this country to be crippled economically to appease a bunch of racist, xeonophobic idiots, mainly. I strawberry floating hate that Leave won because of a pack of lies that duped a ludicrous amount of people. I'm aware the EU isn't perfect, just the pain of leaving it indicates that something seems pretty wrong! However, leaving won't mean we gain anything. The economy will be strawberry floated, jobs will go, people who've lived here all their lives are being kicked out even now. It's just wrong.

There are loads of other reasons too. Reasons that far outweigh any gain from leaving. Because there is nothing to gain.

Why do you want to leave the EU?

Single market, freedom of movement? ease of trading with the worlds largest bloc? Being able to take good ideas from the EU and implement there good ideas whilst voting on the not so good ones...

Im no political expert, but id prefer that to being told OUT MEANS OUT

So you're happy we will need visas and stuff to visit any country? The countries credit rating has been downgraded to its lowest ever? The economy will be shafted, prices will go up, people won't spend as much.

Cant understand being against freedom of movement, but hey ho

I'm not sure what you mean by "people in Canada get along just fine". Canada has a massive resource export industry that makes up a huge part of its economy.

I don't think I would mind remain losing if leave hadnt lied constantly and so blatantly.

If they had been honest and won fair enough, but the fact it wasn't a victory based on fact but one based on lies decite and playing on basic racism and repesting a tag line long enough people just accept it that it is so hard to take.

Canada’s fine! That’s why the 5th biggest economy should aim to be like those Canadians in 10th!

Maybe because the EU houses lots of different countries, as for the harm short-mid term, have you got anything to back that up, that it won't last decades? Pretty sure we won't save any money when we leave, we'll be worse off. Not being able to trade freely with most of europe will also harm us.

Protecting our human rights via international courts and treaties? Encouraging enterprise and investment by remaining a member of (off the top of my head -- certainly one of) the world's largest single market? Profiting from European labour moving into our work force? Getting better international deals by negotiating as a bloc? Standardising our consumer legislation via a government that, while not perfect, is willing to go after big names like Google when they do something wrong? Benefiting from cultural exchange with our neighbours? Boosting the tourism industry by making holidays easy and hassle-free? Fostering international investment by not brazenly going against the advice of almost every economist? Collaborating with our neighbours on important issues like counter-terrorism or nuclear regulation? Access to development and innovation funds targeting our poorest communities, long-forgotten by Westminster? Checking our national government - which is only ever going to get more frighteningly authoritarian - with an essentially centrist one? Having a loud and important voice in one of the world's emergent superpowers? Having the reassurance of being part of a big club to help us when facing bullying or threats from Russia or China? Playing our part to counterbalance America as a western politco-cultural centre (more important now than ever)? Still maintaining the ability to leave at any time if any of the paranoid doomsday scenarios from those 'sovereignty!' people ever actually happen?

No, we'll take what's in May's mystery box.
Image

Why? Because some people watched too much The X-Files and think the EU is some kind of antidemocratic Illuminati, and some others think that voting Leave will make all the brown and eastern European people they see on their morning bus ride disappear. Oh, yeah, and because of that stupid bus ad that the typical voter was apparently too thick to fact-check.

Maybe the UK will be able to 'achieve' some of those things eventually by negotiating, but it's a long time - a big set-back and a lot of pain and hassle and missed opportunities - just to end up back where we started. I pray I won't be here for that process -- working hard on learning Italian and getting my German back up to scratch at the moment. I was born European and I hope to remain European.

"Canada's fine" is such a strawberry floating glib point. It'd be much closer to the point were Canada to be even more closely economically linked to the US, then told the US to strawberry float off publically before claiming the US need them more than vice versa so it'll be fine. It's inconceivable for a reason.

May as well say, Somalia's not fine and is outside the EU so we're all strawberry floated.

It may last decades. There's far too much to compute to know that, and it depends on what happens, but I would predict we'll forever be worse off financially versus had we stayed in the EU. I don't care personally, I find talk of how wealthy we'll be dismal, unless the situation was going to get amazingly bad.

The point was fine. Canada is much less wealthy than we are, that's not going to change any time soon, and they aren't whining about how "poor" they are.

Well, i mean, I'm pretty sure those who aren't very well off in Canada do in fact 'whine' about that.
