By the same logic of Brexiteers thinking the UK isn't a "free country" (despite all the freedoms and liberties that everyone bloody has), what do they think of Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England not being "free countries" because we're in the UK?

That’s always been my thought when Leavers say things like “I want Britain to have sovereignty” or “I don’t want to be ruled by Brussels”. Well ok, but what stops us breaking that down further? Why should Scotland be run by London? Why can’t Cornwall have more sovereignty? Why don’t we go back to city states? Why should I be ran by Bristol City Council, when I would prefer to just declare my home an independent state? Why shouldn’t I have more sovereignty inside my own home and be able to ignore the wifes outrageous and bullying demands for me to take the bins out?

Using Leaver logic, we would have to go back to being hunter gatherers. ;)

Even if we accept the argument that leaving the EU would make us a free country wouldn't signing any free trade agreement that put any kind of controls on us mean that we weren't a free country again?

What about the other super national agreements we are signed up to? Should we look to leave the UN and other international treaties?

Squirrels, hedgehogs, worms, grasshoppers, seagulls and foxes. We have an abundance of food that we could eat if it wasn’t for the our parish councils stopping us being free. :

That speech was a disgrace, yet again. May is evil, incompetent, facile and power-mad. It's time to go! /Claude

So this speech, I'm hearing regulatory alignment, continuing to pay into some EU agencies, a customs "arrangement" to avoid a hard border, some EU law and ECJ decisions will affect us, and losing the banking passport but trying to work a way around that.

She still thinks we can negotiate a bespoke trade deal, despite the EU repeatedly saying that they won't even entertain the idea.

I haven't heard any of it, but from the replies above it sounds like it went well.

I just read the beeb's summary and it sounds awful. She's again saying the EU needs to make some hard choices, but they've already made it clear that they'll except a hard brexit and a hard boarder in Ireland.

Truly predictable but depressing nonetheless. Cakeism continues despite talk of "hard choices" and "no cherry picking". She actually said the UK must be free to diverse its regulation in any area it wants. How is that not cherry picking?

There are no more 'bold and creative' solutions to be found. What solutions are there is what there are. The UK can be inside the CU/SE and enjoy all the benefits that brings, or not be and face the consequences. That is the underlying reality.

This speech, I guess, was rhetoric intended to make May seem reasonable so that she can blame the utter failure of negotiations on the EU.

In March 2019 Project Reality begins the campaign for rejoining the CU/SE and even the EU itself. I expect it to take 10-20 years to reverse the damage and in that time many European countries will overtake us. The 'victory' for the UK will be if it survives that period and does not break down into its component parts.

To me it seems to positioning for the utterly pointless 'have no power but follow all the EUs rules' is in place. The problem with all the waffle is you just can never be 100% sure what she is thinking when she is as clear as mud. - but I think the possibility exists.

The money out there in the big wide world for the UK is so minimal that there is no future in a Hard Brexit no matter how many people support it.

At this point it almost seems like it would be preferable to be subject to all of the EU rules with no say over them given the shambolic state of UK politics. Neither the Tories nor the current Labour party seem to be particularly trustworthy.

My one part of the world, the sad little 'country' called Northern Ireland, is between a rock and hard place. The moment the referendum result came we were either going to be separated from the UK market or the Irish market; there was no way of marrying the two. Most of my family and friends were kidding themselves otherwise but I am beginning see reality dawning. The result in 2016 was delayed hammer blow our economy and now we are just waiting for the hammer to fall. I cannot even move south to escape the consequences because the ROI was heavily dependent on the UK's infrastructure for trade and it will be heavily damaged as well.

I will never forgive the Tory party for this to the day I die. Would not piss on them if they were on fire.

So it was just nonsense. No one could have EVER expected this.

This is maddening. I mean, their refusal to do anything with our border, has she been reading the YouTube comments section for that idea? You need a border if you want to WTO. This is fact. Where's that dreams/reality Dougal Maguire gif when you need it?

All May is doing is laying the groundwork for a Hard Brexit, but for her to say "Well I tried being reasonable, but the EU bullies wouldn't deal so the disaster is all their fault!"

A selection of comments on the Theresa May speech.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-43250035

The EU (Tusk et al) is only interested in one thing; EU organisation itself.
They do not care about the member states of the EU or its citizens.

In the same way, those that shout about Remaining the loudest are equally only trying to protect their own interests.

The EU is self serving in just the same way that Remain voters are equally self serving.

Remain seem to have gone very quiet on their pre-referendum claims:

- Immediate economic crash

- Emergency Budget

- House price collapse

- WW3

So now their Remain argument now boils down to two things;

- A number on the side of a bus

- Oo, you get your Blue Passports (they sneer)

Is that the best they can come up with ?

If leave had lost the referendum

Would remainers be now discussing how they would end freedom of movement to compromise as it was close ?

The UK must retain its full constitutional sovereignty and not allow the backdoor annexation of Northern Ireland by the EU

Lets call the EU's bluff - tell them unless they fundamentally change their approach we will walk away without any deal... which includes no financial settlement!

When Germany invaded Poland we went to war, when Putin annexed the Crimea we condemned and did nothing, when the EU threaten to annex Northern Ireland our remainer politicians line up and support the EU stance.

Disgraceful

...but what Brexit is remains a complete mystery to politicians and the voters alike.

---

No it doesn't.

It means taking back control of our laws, borders and trade.

It means not handing over billions each year to a failing socialist superstate.

That's what we voted for.

Got it yet?

As we get older we get wiser.

Although many remainers are still at the "having a tantrum in the supermarket" stage because they did not get their own way.

The in/out argument has been won and lost

We are leaving. It's called democracy.

Now the grown ups are making sure the will of the people is carried out and we leave the EU

Out is out

#democracy

Umunna is a lunatic. He says he respects the referendum result and then says we should stay in SM & CU effectively stay in. Hes an imbecile and an enemy of democracy. The only way to shut this preposterous argument down is to leave with no deal and then everyone takes a breath and go back to the negotiating table. The EU will then know we are serious and that will focus their minds a bit.

THE REFERENDUM RESULT WAS TO LEAVE - FACT

PEOPLE WHO DON'T VOTE ARE LAZY OR STUPID & IRRELEVANT TO THE DECISION - FACT

The people of NI need legally binding guarantees that NI will be able to trade freely across the Irish border & over the Irish sea without checkpoints, barriers or new business overheads"

or what exactly? They gonna blow us up?

How about the southern irish stop being awkward and re-join the British Isles

put it to a referendum: United Ireland within the British Isles

Almost? ALMOST?

It will be a million percent more preferable. The alternative immediately sends us into a super recession the likes a couple of generations have never seen!

Its also the only alternative left to a Hard Brexit unless they call a referendum and cancel the whole strawberry floating shambles.
