Angela Merkel attacks British 'illusion' of keeping benefits of EU
German chancellor says UK cannot have same rights as member states nor negotiate trade relations before agreeing to pay its bill

Angela Merkel has said British politicians are still living under the “illusion” that the UK will retain most of its rights and privileges once it leaves the European Union.

Addressing her parliament ahead of this weekend’s EU summit at which European leaders will formally adopt Brexit negotiation guidelines, the German chancellor said: “Countries with a third country status – and that’s what Great Britain will be – cannot and will not have the same or even more rights as a member of the European Union. All 27 member states and the European institutions agree on this.”

“Ladies and gentlemen,” she continued, “you may think that all this is self-evident. But I have to put this so clearly because I get the impression that some in Great Britain still have illusions about this, and that is a waste of time.”

Merkel also said it made “no sense” to negotiate a future UK-EU relationship without agreement on the UK’s financial commitment to the EU, while also hinting that parallel discussions could be possible once questions about budget contributions had been satisfied.

“We can only make a deal about Britain’s future relationship to the EU once all questions about the terms of its exit can be clarified to a satisfying degree.

“That means the sooner the British government is prepared to find constructive solutions, the sooner we can engage with their desire to already talk during the exit negotiations about the future relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union. But first we need to know how Great Britain sees its future relationship with us.”

Merkel said all 27 members agreed that this could be the only order in which the talks could proceed.

We are piss small compared the EU and pretty much to take whatever they want to shove up us with a smile as without their trade we are strawberry floated.

I agree, in large part, but we do have one of the largest and most important financial sectors on Earth. How long for is debatable, but at the time of the negotiations this will still be the case.

Not really, they are already making plans to leave. Friends of mine who worked in the UK banking sector have been moved to the US. Another guy I know says that it look likely that the majority of the UK banking sector Germany. Apparently they already in talks about large building projects with various cities.

The other thing that isn't really been talked about is that the UK has a load of management companies that sell services across Europe. I know a guy who works for a company that manages weather satellites and sells the data across Europe. Apparently they are looking to leave the country within the next two years along with companies that do various project management type stuff.

It actually be better for places in Europe if we leave as they can drain those companies from us as it will massively improve their economies.

I hope for the love of god we retain single market access, or my job is in serious danger. Most of our clients are actually companies that sell services within/for the EU. Without those the company I work for is going to be in big trouble.

It might be time to start learning a European language rather than Japanese...

I as well as pretty decent Japanese and English can speak very basic German, but it's been so long since I've used it that all the grammar in my head gets muddled with Japanese.

I'm not really sure I can judge it. It's good enough that I can play through games, read articles/books/comics, listen to Radio/Music and watch TV/Movies without any subtitles or translating (although games and articles I still need to look up words sometimes as there's a lot of words that I don't know/may not recognise right away).

I've never done any official qualifications or tests in it.

English is the language of business. Nothing is going to change on the language front.

Yeah, thankfully English will remain the international language. Although if you want a decent job in continental Europe that doesn't change the fact you need a second language unless you get extremely lucky.

There are sample questions for the JLPT questions you can try if you want to see how good you are.

http://www.jlpt.jp/e/samples/forlearners.html

I'm guessing that you're at least N2. Although the test is really anal on what it tests.
