The GFA has absolutely not failed. It's given us 20 years of peace! And the people of NI voted for it in a referendum no less! 81% turnout with 71% in favour of it, much more than the 52% "will of the people"! They're taking this Brexit shite to a new level of insanity if they're seriously discussing ripping up our international peace treaty. This is dangerous lunacy.

People voted for joining Europe in a referendum but the 2016 will of the people trumps everything.

Let's be honest, Brexit is like a cult for some now. They can't be reasoned with. I have tried on other pockets of the internet.

Well, I guess this is how radical Brexiteers are going to rationalise the incompatibility of the GFA with hard Brexit; it doesn't matter because the GFA is failed anyway. Cool!

A referendum cannot overturn or take priority over a peace treaty. Thats the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

Thats the narrative they will spin, but its always important to step back a bit from the insanity and realise that that narrative WILL NOT WORK.

I'm not sure where that leaves the supporters of it.

That narrative will work perfectly on the people that it needs to work on.

Facts are old news mate, they don’t matter anymore. Identify an “enemy” that can’t defend itself or will not respond in the same populistvway and then just hammer out the lies about them. Enough people will believe the lies to propel your policies forward.

It’s sad, but that’s the future.

Thats absolutely not the case. The facts will only work on those converted to them.

It will not work on the people they would need to convince to make that a reality.

Thing is, the situation is so impossible, I struggle to see a situation where the deadline isn't kicked down the road. We are currently in a state of paralysis, but no amount of nonsensical bleating from the Mail etc about the Good Friday Agreement is going to get people to tear that up, because another country has a say! Don't get me wrong, its incredibly worrying people will even talk or try convince people of such idiocy, but that viewpoint would have to CONVERT people who dont currently agree with them, and that is one hell of a hard sell. Ireland are hardly 'those nasty Europeans'.

Not the case? Did you see what happened before, during and after the referendum?

Lying about the EU, the Irish and remainers will work perfectly, just as it already has.

It won't help implement Brexit, nor help tear up the Good Friday Agreement. Thats my point.

Will it get supporters? Sure...but not new ones. Not new MPs either, in a government which whether it likes it or not that is strongly pro-Remain.

Add that in with the UKs limited ability to negotiate and I don't see how we leave paralysis mode anytime soon, unless government gets a spine and sucks out the venom. They pretty much cannot proceed unless they go with the softest of Brexits and sorta pretend that its some great victory for Britain and the narrative spins to that. Nothing else makes any kind of sense unless they have actually lost the plot.

I don't think May is queen Brexiteer. I think she wants to maintain a balance, but she has to be 'seen' to come across as hard Brexit because of her weak position in her party. Its a totally impossible situation.

May isn’t Queen Brexit, but she’s barely in control. Johnson, Gove, Davis, Fox, Rees-Mogg etc etc will call the shots. If they want to hard Brexit and rip the GFA up, then they will.

And the hard right will tell so many lies that half the country will cheer them on as they do it.

Thats the threat, but its not the current situation. I dont think Johnson etc have any real power right now, but they could do in the future.

EDIT - I dont see how even an extreme Brexit government can make a decision on the Republics behalf.

May isn’t going to last. She’s only there to act as a fallguy. She’ll be the one they blame if they don’t get a hard Brexit.

Hard Brexit disaster = fault of EU, Irish, Remainers

Soft Brexit disaster = fault of EU, Irish, Remainers and Theresa May

They can’t. But the GFA isn’t going to work if one side says they’re not going to follow it anymore.
