Forget that, we could buy an extra 3 or 4 DUP MPs every week.

:fp:

On average, respondents said they would expect to pay £405 per year, which included 32 per cent of people who would not be willing to pay anything.

So if everyone eligible to vote paid what they would be willing to pay the EU for EU citizenship (including those who don't want to pay anything), would we be sending the EU more money from the UK than we currently do?

46,501,241 eligible to vote in the referendum * £405 average payment per year = £18.83 billion per year to the EU

In 2015, the UK’s full membership fee was £17.8 billion. However, Britain doesn’t pay that full fee. Because of a deal negotiated by Margaret Thatcher in 1984, Britain gets a “rebate”, an annual reduction in contributions.

In 2015, that rebate reduced our contribution to £12.9 billion. That’s around £200 for every person in the UK.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/0/how-m ... t-pay-for/
In 2016 the UK government paid £13.1 billion to the EU budget, and EU spending on the UK was forecast to be £4.5 billion. So the UK’s ‘net contribution’ was estimated at about £8.6 billion.

https://fullfact.org/europe/our-eu-memb ... 5-million/

When I got my tax breakdown from the DWP 2 years ago I think my contribution for that year towards EU membership was something between 50p - £5  and I'm guessing most of that comes back in the rebate from the EU.

Here's the pie chart from the letter I got back in 2015

Did anyone else get one? I have only had the one ever. It gave you a complete break down of every penny of the TAX/NI you paid that year and where it went.

I don’t remember ever receiving one.

I’d imagine Leavers will be split amongst two groups with that though. One group would say “even 1p wud b 2 much ITS R MONEY!!” and the other group would say it was all lies and we actually pay far more than the government would ever dare to admit.

These people will never ever accept that they were wrong or that they were lied to.

As I said yesterday, it is easier to fool somebody than convince them that they have been fooled. And these people are the most foolish of all of the fools. It doesn't bode well for this country over the next 5-10 years when the angry and poor Leave voters start feeling the pinch and are looking to lash out.

The flip side of this is that any good news is immediately reported as 'Despite Brexit...' The fringes of both sides are rubbish. I really hope that mainstream Leave supporters aren't anything like those people you quoted.

I did think it could be propaganda at the time as I received mine just after The Conservatives won that general election, and the EU contribution is listed at the very top. However that BBC article dates back to 2014

Critics
But the TUC has already dismissed this as "party political propaganda masquerading as neutral information".
It said the figures were designed to soften up the electorate for further spending cuts, and by implication, boost the Tory vote.

You sound like the posters on BBC comments…. ;)

I only ever see the phrase “despite Brexit” when it is relevant to the story or is a quote from an industry expert.

It is in no way the same thing as Leavers that have gone from “We will be better off” to “the experts are lying” to “let’s wait and see what the figures are” to “I don’t care if we are worse off, it’s worth it” in the space of a year.

Yep, saying 'Despite Brexit' is just as bad as being a willful and complete racist.

A few more comments on that Taoiseach story.

Why cant anyone see that with no border the muslims will simply head for dublin, up to belfast and eithet settle there or straight for the ferry to england. Either way they will still keep coming, just using a different border crossing

You bet Varadakar is sweating.

UK is a massive net contributor to EU funds and IR is a large net recipient.

UK taxpayers are paying his wages and financing his arrogance.

WE are not irish citizens , for your the ill informed murphy. we wont be EUROPEAN [with a big E] very soon. and if I want to know what "pip squeak" irish p.m's. opinion on the new NORTHERN IRELAND border is I will learn german and go talk to angela to find out what he is allowed to think and then ignore it.

Where did this little bit of nothing crawl out from to order us around?

This is something that the UK government should stamp down on hard. They listen to the British people not to a foreign upstart.

If Varadkar is really set on maintaining the present border arrangements he has a very clear option.

He can propose to the people that the IR should also exit the EU as soon as possible after Brexit, hold a referendum and actually do what the Irish people want for a change.

Some state Ireland has done well in the EU , who was it who had to bail them out, Oh yes it was the UK.

Anyone here old enough to remember the Boomtown Rats hit single "Banana Republic". Nothing much has changed!

Donaldson made his false claim on national radio and wasn't corrected by the interviewer because they didn't have the actual number to hand.

That tweet giving the real number only got a couple of hundred retweets so the lie had a far larger audience. In those circumstances it's unfortunately easy for ignorance to spread.

To be fair a lot of the top comments seemed more positive. Although there is an almost 50/50 split on the positive to negative votes on each post.

Reading comments on any news site is generally a waste of time. So much uninformed bs, it's not worth getting worked up about.

I disagree, if Brexit and Trump teach us anything it's to be aware of what the angry bigots are ranting about.
