The French thing is quite interesting

During/Since the Referendum, we were constantly told "look, it's not about race/xenophobia" and "We're leaving the EU, not Europe".

And now...."EWWWW A FROGGIE TOUCHING MY PASSPORT? THIS IS A NATIONAL DISGRACE"

I've managed to get hold of one of the first of the new passport designs which have been passed to the British Government for approval:

Leavers seem to be consoling themselves by telling everyone that this is actually one of the reasons we should leave. It’s the EU forcing us to allow EU firms to bid!

Except the WTO rules they are so fond of are almost identical.

It's the YouGov Poll you've all been waiting for...

(snip)

Riveting.

I wonder how the vote would look if the choices were "Gemalto" and "De La Rue".

How does protectionism work legally in the EU and under WTO? UK warships as I recall have to be built in the UK, Italy bail out their steel industry against EU rules and don't the French have some weird rule where their service vehicles have to be predominantly French?

Genuine question here, not making a political point. I'm a firm believer in an open market and if a French manufacturer can outbid a UK one then so be it.

If the government put it out to tender, then they must allow foreign companies to bid and treat them fairly.

If the government wanted to do it “in house” then they wouldn’t need to invite bids from foreign companies.

The selection process is also completely blind. The government don't get to see which company actually made which bid, they only see the actual pound amounts. The 'winner' isn't revealed to the government until after the contract is actually awarded.

I lost track of whose side the supposed ruling class is supposed to be on according to the Daily Mail ages ago, let alone who they actually are in this case.

It's ironic that the Daily Mails question could just as easily be asked of The Daily Mail!

And while we are talking about passports and fish, the main roadblock for talks is more than likely ignored.

Great stuff.

I would love if it transpires no UK companies bid for the contract.
