The defeat of the government this week was a small but welcome step in asserting control over the reckless leadership of the UK.

Stopping Brexit is not a serious option but we can, if we are lucky, limit the most of the possible damage. If we can secure SM membership or something like it then UK manufacturing can be saved from utter desolation and horrible effect that will have on some of the least well off. Sure, even inside the single market there will be a financial hit to sectors like finance due to passporting rights but that can mitigated by moving some offices to Ireland and not losing too many jobs. There will also be the cost of key EU agencies relocating and jobs lost that way but that will likely ultimately be compensated by reduced fees to the EU as we would not be true members.

We are somewhat lucky in that 80% of the economy is service based, which is really a bad thing in itself but works out well in this case as means that areas that are most at risk by losing EU membership are relatively small. Still, 20% of the economy taking even marginal damage is nothing to be sneezed at. Exposure to local farmers and factories to cheap international imports from economies we simple cannot compete with on our wages and standard of living, as well as increased barriers to EU countries were UK products have can currently compete quite well facts to external tariffs, has the potential to be devastating. These industries are also overwhelmingly concentrated in areas that can least afford the loss so there's a real social disaster waiting to happen too.
