Not to mention dealing with breakdowns, people needing to stop to pee etc.
It is too far to be a "you must keep going" tunnel and to under the sea to make a services or whatever.

They had the former president of the Institution of Structural Engineers on Radio 4 this morning and he said while it would be a huge undertaking by both countries it would be absolutely possible to do.

Some other expert said you could even do both and have a bridge that segues into a tunnel and then back out again, with two islands also built.

Presumably if the Germans try and invade again (having taken France) we’ll just blow up the bridge.

Why not build a bridge connecting Northern Ireland to Scotland instead?

I don't see how the South East of England benefits there. :?

Seems like a publicity stunt meant more to boost Boris Johnson's popularity than anything that will actually happen.

He really does like his bridges. It makes more sense if you think of bridges as a phallic symbol.

I work in engineering and its entirely possible from a British industry perspective, but it would obviously need support from France and the EU.

Its a desirable project, but probably about 70 years too early. Continental wide infrastructure needs to change in terms of self driving vehicles (car and boats).

The only way the UK would do it is by paying a private firm a set amount, then doubling that amount and paying them subsidies for the next one hundred years whilst they charge sky high tolls.

I imagine running the bridge would be a nightmare. You be forever toeing breakdowns off the bridge.

What side of the road would you drive on over it though?

It'd be like an F-Zero track, where both lanes twizzle spiralistically through the air and switch places.

Just put one lane on top of the other lane. That way everybody will be happy.

That lovely EU. I guess they aren't an evil dictatorship after all.
