It's open to cities in EU member states, in countries that are candidates for EU membership, or in countries that are part of the European Economic Area, and the winner receives EU funding.

By 2023 the UK will very likely no longer be an EU member state, won't be looking to join the EU, and won't be in the EEA.

It's a bit of a weird one being open to candidate countries, presumably they must pay some money to the EU?

They've applied to be members or are members of the single market even if not in the EU proper.

Yeah, I'm aware of that. I guess it's just part of the charade the EU plays with Turkey.

I can't see that happening, because it would basically break Brexit. Scotland would be mad as strawberry float about it.

Yep. Cornwall and Wales will probably start on about it as well now that they've realised how hard Brexit is going to strawberry float them and the UK government have no intention (or ability really) to match EU funding.

As Squinty says, I don't think that is likely to happen.

And as it says a "Downing Street" spokesman says it is a "possibility" that might happen in the "negotiations", I think the government think it unlikely as well. ;)

Scotland would have a point. Cornwall and Wales can strawberry float off, they both voted out!

You'll have to move to Grimsby for that.

This seems like the only semi-workable solution for Northern Ireland IMO, no-one seems to be able to come up with anything that's realistically better. If it makes Scotland angry, so be it - Northern Ireland shouldn't be forced into a much shittier Brexit situation than the rest of the UK when leaving was against the will of the province in the first place, and it strawberry floats with our international treaty with Ireland too. Scotland will still be angry about Brexit regardless.

The EU won't let that happen. It would just be an open door to the Customs Union for the rest of the UK. All trade would just pass mysteriously through NI.

They already suggested it:
Brussels' chief Brexit negotiator has made the case for Northern Ireland remaining in the European Union customs union after Britain leaves the EU, to solve a deadlock in talks over the Irish border.

Michel Barnier said there were already over 100 areas where Northern Ireland implemented special rules to harmonise with the Republic and argued that Brexit called for a "specific solution" to "unique circumstances".

I can think of one thing that is realistically better. The whole of the UK stays in the EU and we scrap all this bullshit and solve/avoid all the problems.

Remember, if everything goes badly we know who to blame. All those bloody Remainers who talk the country down!

But we have a good dessert restaurant. You'll like it. :toot:
