It's almost like being in the EU doesn't actually impact your status as an independent nation.

I honestly find your views verging on medieval.

It's almost like they understand that working as a continent and not looking inwardly is a good idea for prosperity and achieving shared goals.

Mental.

It’s almost like there is a difference between being invaded/forcibly colonised and willingly joining a union of equal member states.

There must be a difference there but I just can’t see it.

I was being sensible.

Working as a a continent is the only way to properly take things like pollution, climate change, poverty etc.

Shutting yourself and an inward view only makes things worse.

It's an independent nation but the EU makes up a lot of its laws. It hardly a stretch to see why this could be a problem for people who want greater independence.

If only every member of the EU had the ability to veto a law that they might not like being introduced.

You weren't. I said something surprised me and you responded in a snarky manner. If you've a thought to share you can do it without being that way.

Sorry it was sarky however my point stands. Being part of the EU is good for the continent and those in it, additionally there is representation within it for those that want to participate, it doesn't help that we had shitting ukip bells as ours.

The EU has faults but it is a force for good overall and not a big evil dominating thing people of your political view seem to think it is.

Former UKIP leader Nigel Farage has said he thinks there is a public appetite for Ireland to withdraw from the European Union.

Speaking to RTE News, he said that "there are voices now in Ireland saying maybe the Brits are right about it.

"There are lots of people in the professional media, civil service and political classes who love the European Union, but actually, if you go a few miles outside Dublin, it’s not all that pro-EU. I’ve never bought this argument that Ireland is totally pro-EU."

Mr Farage also claimed that Irish people had told him "it’s about time we had a UKIP in Ireland".

Plainly Nigel is unaware of the very successful* National Party which is all set to top the polls the next time we have an election.

Lucien wrote:I'm surprised how pro-EU Ireland supposedly is. Given they fought the UK for independence fairly recently I'd have thought they'd be fiercely independent.

Being in the EU is what has helped Ireland become truly independent from the UK. Before we joined the UK government basically had the Irish governments balls in a vise as our economy was so dependent on the UK which is why Ireland couldn't join the EU until the UK also joined. That dependency has fallen consistently since joining the EU and most people recognize that.

*Lol, they're not successful at all. Even the farmers, supposedly one of the most conservative groups in Ireland think they're horrible.

http://www.thejournal.ie/james-reynolds-icsa-3467197-Jun2017/

THE HIGH COURT has dismissed an application by National Party co-founder James Reynolds to continue an injunction preventing the Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers Association (ICSA) from removing him from senior positions he had held with the organisation.

The ICSA said it decided to remove Reynolds as a member of the County Executive for Longford and its National Executive as the National Treasurer because of his involvement with the National Party which it described as being “in the mode of right-wing European movements”.

I'm not really surprised by how Pro-EU Ireland is. Ireland has done really well in the EU over the past few years.

It sounds stupid, but good lord, the work done on the motorway down to Dublin from Belfast is a triumph. Partially funded by the EU as far as I'm aware.

I'm getting a real hard on for roadworks. Nothing beats a road without potholes every two feet.

Lol Farage, NI didn't even vote to leave the EU, there's no way Ireland wants to follow the UK. The EU has been overall massively beneficial to Ireland.

This whole 'independance' thing. I couldn't give a strawberry float if were independent personally! To me that's so irrelevant. It amazes me people care so much.

I’m struggling to think of a more incorrect post in recent times.

You know Sinn Féin who were born from The IRA are pro Europe right?

No of course you didn’t. :fp:

It’s like you can have Nationalism AND be in the EU.

Really makes you tink.

The EU doesn't take any 'independence' from a country, you are free to leave at any time. It's absurd to compare that to Ireland having been ruled by the UK.

I love it when Lucien gets like that. It's his tell: soon as he gets all pissy about manners he's realised he's in an argument he can't win.

Happens a lot for some reason.
