I don't think it's a grey area, it's one thing to go wide when going wheel to wheel, and quite another to cut the corner to overtake. It takes nothing away from Max's drive, but he did cut the corner in order to get by.

I think that's correct. He wasn't avoiding a collision or anything, it was purely about an overtake.

I agree totally regarding Max's overtake but there is scope for the current rules to be applied inconsistently and I'm sure plenty of examples.

Drivers must make every reasonable effort to use the track at all times and may not deliberately leave the track without a justifiable reason.

Drivers will be judged to have left the track if no part of the car remains in contact with it and, for the avoidance of doubt, any white lines defining the track edges are considered to be part of the track but the kerbs are not.

Should a car leave the track the driver may re-join, however, this may only be done when it is safe to do so and without gaining any lasting advantage. At the absolute discretion of the race director a driver may be given the opportunity to give back the whole of any advantage he gained by leaving the track.

This is the exact wording of the current regulations, hardly black and white.

To use Bottas vs Ricciardo as an example, Bottas certainly had 'justifiable reason' for leaving the track but given that he was ever so slightly behind Ricciardo at the apex of the corner, it's hard to argue that he joined 'without gaining any lasting advantage'. This incident is very different to and much less obvious than Verstappen's but it still neatly demonstrates that the current rules can be interpreted in a variety of ways. Although I agree with the penalty for Max, I can see why this sort of thing is frustrating for drivers.

Anyone else think it looked a little deliberate?

Possibly but I doubt it.

Hamilton is really slow.
