As far as I know RE is still a compulsory subject and schools still have to provide a "daily act of worship".

Yeah RE is compulsory for all schools under the current laws, right up until sixth form. Collective worship is also required, but parents have the right to have their children excused from this if they so desire.

So basically the facebook ranter is wrong about that as well!

My grandad worked down the pits and he never complained, mainly because he had black lung and couldn't speak but that's besides the point!

Hang on, I've just checked this and collective worship is indeed a thing. I don't remember doing any collective worship when I was in school.

I remember that being a thing at my CoE primary school, but it must have been basically ignored at my secondary school. We did do RE up until Year 9 though.

"Collective worship" even sounds a bit evil, doesn't it?

We had one lesson (50 minutes) per week of RE at my secondary school but I don’t remember them doing any sort of collective worship. I guess they either ignored it or pretended that the RE lesson counted.

I remember having to have assembly every day at junior school, a hymm would be sung and occasionally the local vicar would be there. And I went to a heathen school, it must be awful at CoE/Catholic schools.

My Catholic primary wasn't that ott on it, must've got lucky

Nowadays they have a chapel but I guess it was the bare minimum stuff back in my day, had the assemblies and sing-song but once it got past the prep for first Communion it was all down to the personal choice...

Secondary schools don't really care for it in the most part I think...

I think it does vary greatly depending on school, most just seem to nod at it enough to satisfy the requirement. I remember having hymns in primary school, but basically have no recollection of anything like that at secondary school.

I can't actually even remember having assembly at all during secondary school. Perhaps I should have paid more attention!

Had morning prayers and hymns at School.

Then had Chapel practice Saturday morning.

Then, because I was a boarder, had Chapel Sunday evening .

If that doesn't get a kid to hate religion then nothing will.

Yeah we had hymns in primary school, although I think it was once a week not every day. Nothing of the sort in secondary school though, apart from assemblies but they weren't religious in nature.

I did have to take RE as a GCSE though. It wasn't so bad because it basically boiled down to "yes Roman Catholics are really against abortions/contraception/whatever else because God said so, but Protestants are more relaxed on the rules."

We did RE in High School, but I can't remember any collective worship.

Not technically Facebook but worth a watch from a few years ago. Stanmore is the... less nice... part of Winchester. I lived there for two years as an undergraduate. This is apparently the crew. Now I think about it, this was actually filmed when I lived there. What a thought.
