Growing up in Carlisle, Shan was one of the words we young kids would often use in reference to unfairness or perceived injustice. While it might be Scottish in origin, it did cross the border.

I've heard shanner, as in "That car is an absolute shanner" but it tends to stop being in use once it passes the povvo line(I grew up partly in a gooseberry fool area).

I read it a lot on Pie and Bovril. Mainly from Morton fans. That possibly explains it...
