I also have the slight problem of not having any keys in my possession. :( So I either have to bring that uselsess strawberry floater of a thief along for the ride(and letting a decent, useful fighter sit out) or use another character to kill the guard outside and get the key off him. Using that method, it usually takes 3 turns to open up the gate to where Marth & Co are. And by then I'm completely surrounded.

The fact that you're split up into 4 different areas of the map also cripples me. My team works well as a unit, not as 4 different mini-squads. Some fella's get completely rizaped.

I'm guessing the dragons in chapter 24 aren't going to stop re-spawning unless I press forward are they?

I've been holding the line for 32 turns now. It's good for levelling-up some of my characters, but there's the very real danger that I might run out of dragon-slaying weapons. Which I imagine would be a bad idea.

Edit: ...and I lost a unit. Man, if I were a violent person that DS would be lying in pieces right now.

Just run them around the left side of the map, there's no need for a key. They'll get around in about the same time.

Oxx- just finish the level (after using the Aum staff, natch)

After perseverig for an hour or so, I finally passed it last night. :)

Lost 5 guys doing it, though. :( 4 of which were deliberate. I put them in the top right corner and used them as bait. The final boss was pretty easy once I got to him. Marth took over half his hp with one blow, and the Manakete girl(Tiki?) finished him off.

Great game. Bring on another!

That sounds really upsetting. Which five lost their lives so that good could triumph over evil?

...

I nailed 24 with the next attempt. After making sure a few of my guys maxed their stats I just flew down and killed the dragon guarding the seize-point and the rest is history.

Chapter 25 on the other hand...

I gave it a quick go last night before realising my head wasn't really in it. The stage looks pretty insane. I thought about taking a really small, strong group of my finest units in there, but I'm not sure if that will be enough. I'm also debating the 'Blitzkirieg' vs trying to re-unite my army before the main assault.

Is there anything worth buying in the shop?

I didn't even try it. It's the last level, you won't need much equipment.

Congrats Chalky. Out of interest, what sort of team (levels wise) did you have?
(I abused an arena at one point, so the stage lasted nearly 4 hours, so I reckon that made it a lot easier. Most were about level 6 promoted, although Merric was maxed out.)

I'll have to try the online at some point, though I'll wait until after Christmas.

Do the doors in chapter 25 open again on their own or is a key the only way to do it?

I had a promising attempt just now, but those ballistas just keep my penned in.

Don't think so.

Cover the stairs where the ballistas emerge from.

Yeah, I'll try. The first time I tried the level I got one of my units trapped in there. I think if I can get one of my stronger characters in there early enough I can really get a decent foothold in the level.

A key is the only way. You need to get out of the opening rooms inside two turns or you're trapped in there for the rest of the game. The next two rooms lock up after 5 turns. And there's nothing in the shop in the corner that can't be gotten in your armory pre-chapter. Don't even bother going down there.

My highest was Jake the ballista guy, on L34, second was Shiida I think(post Master seal) in the mid 20's, with Marth in third approaching 20. Everyone else was in late single digits or early teens, though they were all 'master sealed'.

These are the brave soldiers I'm sending into the bowels of hell to slay that infernal dragon:

Marth - Lord - level 26
Gordin - Sniper - level 8
Lena - Bishop - level 7
Boah - Bishop - level 11
Shiida - Dracoknight - level 18
Ogma - Hero - level 2
Barst - Warrior - level 20
Hardin - Paladin - level 2
+ that Goatse fellow.

Some may return stronger, some may fall.

I put 4 characters in the top right-hand corner with the explicit intention of blocking the door to keep the 5 guys over in that area sealed inside. 3 nobodys that I don't think I had ever picked before(bait) and my workhorse Knight 'Draug'. I kitted him out with 3 sets of vulnerary's and put him in the doorway and held them off for about 8 turns before they got the better of him. :( The boy done well.

My master sniper 'Jeorge' was also taken out by a ballista about 2 turns before the end. :(

Victory.

There's nothing quite like a perfectly executed battleplan. Once the western ballista room is secured it's a bit of a cakewalk.

Still, quite a journey. Some quite touching moments in the epilogue. If only the character relationships had been interwoven with the game as a whole.

Only two losses throughout the quest. Abel right at the beginning and Radd in chapter 8.

We can lock this thread now, we've all finished. Jazzem can make his own one. ;)

I always find it really interesting how different everybody's teams are by the end of the game. I'm a pretty conservative, loyal player so most of my trusted units have been with me since the early stages. Final-fx keeps mentioning all these characters I've never even heard of and I didn't think to use the ballista dude that was one of Chalky's strongest units.

It is one of the series' strongest points: the way in which you feel that you're making meaningful choices and that customising your characters really makes a difference to the experience.

It's an RPG in it's purest form, concentrating just on the aspects that really define the genre: combat, characters, and customisation. There's no tedious world map to navigate, no soulless grinding to improve your characters, no long-winded 'story' sequences (in the handheld versions)...every decision matters and that's why it's so compelling.

Now, off to alter my GOTY nominations...

Exactly, I pretty much ignore any axe units.

How could you not use Nabarl? :fp:

Also, if you've finished it:
Who did you revive with the Aum staff?

I would update the thread title with the ending, but HoC is still playing it. :P :P

Was Nabarl a character you had to recruit? If so, I probably killed him and feasted on his entrails.

Why not? Crazy foo'.
