I don't think he's really done better than anyone previously. Just got nicer fixtures than anyone previously. People act like embarrassing exits are the norm for England, but Iceland was the only one in ages. 2014, knocked out by a very good Italy side and a good Uruguay side that had considerably home advantage in the South American climate. 2012 knocked out by a very good Italy side, and 2010 by a very good German side. Think England should have actually expected to beat both Croatia in 2018 and Italy in 2021, more than they should have beaten any of those previous sides. The German win in 2021 was at least good, but the World Cup in 2018 they absolutely beat nobody of the caliber that usually knocks them out.

Where's the idea that Southgate's England somehow had easier fixtures than other England managers have faced?

World Cup:

Group: Belgium, Tunisia, Panama

Not a hard group of course, but comparable to other WC groups.

Round of 16: Colombia

From memory people were tipping Colombia as the tournament dark horses. They are a decent side.

Quarter Finals: Sweden

Always a solid if unspectacular side. And usually beat or draw with England.

Semi Finals: Croatia

They were great in this tournament and England took them to extra time.

I'd agree England were on the easier side of the split, but none of those were really easier games than England have faced in previous tournaments.

Euros:

Group: Croatia, Scotland, Czech Republic

Croatia are not a crap team. Scotland aren't great but it's never going to be an easy game due to history and motivation. The Czech's aren't what they were in the 90s, but they are far from gooseberry fool.

Round of 16: Germany

They might not be what they were, but strawberry float off if you think Germany are ever an easy team to play against.

Quarter-Final: Ukraine

This was an easy one, Ukraine are a shadow of the team they were a decade or so before.

Semi-Final: Denmark

After what happened to Eriksen, they played like a team possessed. And even without that, they were from a gooseberry fool or easy team.

Final: Italy

Easily the best team in the entire tournament. And that statement isn't even close. And England took them to penalties.

As with the World Cup, England were on the easier side of the split. But it's very comparable to what England have faced (and failed against) in other Euros.

I think people underestimate beating Denmark last time, they are surely at the moment dark horses to win the World Cup. They looked really excellent before they played us and gave us a really tough game.

2002 was the year we should have won it. Beat Brazil (who I don't think were at the height of their powers, not far off mind) and we would have taken that World Cup.

Fully agree with Moggy.

I also think people won't be happy unless we win something by beating Spain, Argentina and Italy in the group then going onto beat Portugal, Spain, Brazil and Germany in the knockouts.

If we can't beat France have we even won a tournament?

The French have imploded again due to infighting

Nothing short of the World Cup itself.

A solid performance, getting through to the latter stages, but end up being found out by a better team. I can see it already 90 minutes of pain, defenders passing the ball sideways while the midfield strawberry floating stand around instead of making space until eventually someone hoofs it and maybe Kane makes something of it and Southgate refusing to make a sub until 85 minutes in.

QFs looks tough to negotiate. Potentially France and Argentina in the mix for that. Denmark too.

We could potentially lose to anyone in Group A but at the same time I think they are very beatable too. Gonna really deoend how air conditioned these stadiums are!

Yep, 2002 was there for the taking. Brazil weren't great - the 98 side was arguably better - but were the most consistent side in the tournament. And the tournament was pretty dire in terms.of quality.

We were beating Brazil 1-0 until just before half time, when Beckham (rushed back from injury) leapt out of tackle and they hit us on the break. We were knocked out by a fluke goal/terrible goalkeeping.

Had we progressed, we'd have played Turkey in the semi final and Germany in the final. We would later go on and play Turkey in 2003 for Euro 2004 qualifying and we beat them at home and drew 0-0 away (in a game where a draw meant we would top the group).

The Germany side was probably one of the worst finalists in living memory and was seen as the dying embers of some.of the great 90s sides. The final was in July 2002, and we'd beat them 5-1 in qualifying in September the previous year.

I take umbridge with the idea with some of the previous WC results being okay. WC 2010 does not get a pass because we got knocked out by Germany (who I think got knocked out themselves next round). The group stage was absolutely sure - 1-1 with the USA, 0-0 with Algeria and a very fortunate 1-0 win against Slovenia.

Our group games in the Euros were decent. Beating Czech Republic and Croatia is decent, and a draw with Scotland was okay, in what is effectively a fiery derby.

We also have to remember that in literally every tournament since beating Ecuador in WC 2006, we've been eliminated in our first knockout game I think? Southgate has won 5. And the two he hasn't won, one went to extra time and one to penalties.

Now, I don't think his record is without criticism - both of those games, we sat back and tried to defend a 1-0 lead. We went too deep, got too nervous and too passive. But in both, we had chances where we arguably should have scored a second (think it was Kane before times too?).

He's earned the right to have a go at this World Cup. If we badly underperform, then the FA should have a look at his position and see if they can make a change. It probably would be a good time to make a change (3 tournaments is a lot, and more than most get).

I expect us to progress from the group stage. After that it's a bit of a lottery, you would expect to be facing big teams in the knockouts but you never know. I think quarters or semis isn't an unreasonable expectation.

The brutal schedule decimates player welfare. England go to the tournament with far from the strongest first team but a decent squad overall, with several players making the cut who've not played club football in some months due to a spate of injuries. The air conditioned stadia lead to a surge in Covid among some squads. The WHO take an unnecessarily long time to declare the new strain, leading to some funster on Twitter labelling it the VARiant. We reach the final, with Rashford and Alli sharpest of all, fresh from a complete lack of football. They defeat the aching heroes of Wales, who surprised many to get so far, led by their talismanic captain, who shunned the offers of British clubs to turn out for the Qatari Hyper League in preparation. Sadly Gareth forgets that the golf courses aren't air conditioned and comes down with heatstroke days before the game. The Notorious P.A.G.E. reacts with fury and hands Kieffer Moore the armband. Aaron Ramsey misses three penalties. Harry Kane refuses to lift the trophy and instead reveals a T Shirt dedicated to those workers who died building the infrastructure. Souness is furious: why didn't Paul Pogba do anything?
