PostThe Genius of Charles Darwin - C4, 8pm

Tonight's episode, the last in this mini-series on Darwin, evolution, and religion being wrong, should be a really good one, as he's now actually taking on religion 'properly' for the first time in the series, so I hope you're all watching it. To kick things off in the way of some kind of debate...

JNR wrote:I think this programme has been well produced, well researched and has the best intentions. It seeks to inform, to teach us about evolution (in the first two episodes) and then, presumably, to look at how the theory of evolution has been accepted, or not, in the developed world.

I'm guessing that the last episode will be used to thrash the religious nutjobs and prove their arguments to be short sighted when compared with science. Science, let's not forget, is grounded in hypothesis, in evidence and in critical evaluation, both from the author and their peers. Religion and things like alternative medicine (they are more similar than you might think) isn't. And this will hopefully be explained, to remind everyone why science is such a formidabble way of thinking that seems to have escaped the general public these days (no thanks to lazy journalism by journalists who don't know a thing about science, I might add).

I'd like to remind everyone that creationism or intelligent design, or whatever name religious explanations of the natural world is masquerading under these days, isn't contained in the barmy, surreal religious organisations in the US. It's over here now.

If you live in Northern Ireland and are sane, start worrying.

 I did a little lol at that. It's going to get more interest when they bring out the 'creationist scientist'.

I guess it's the point, but this seems ridiculously one sided.

Has he set out to find the most ludicrously fanatical religious nut jobs he can find?

Just to point it out, this is now a 6 page topic, if you add it to the one on GR.

I only know of him through his books, not that I've read any. Is he a particularly controversial documentary maker?

That religious scientist bloke sounded like a person who wants to be a scientist but isn't confident enough in science, so falls back on religion. It's sad really.

Very one sided, but as he's right you can't hold that against him. He always gets on the complete delusionals. There was a new ager in a previous series who claimed she could awaken your atlantean DNA.

Apparently the Archbishop of Canterbury is in this episode. Quite a big step up from the normal fools.

It seems like he's always fighting against whoever he's talking to.

Even this set of teachers.

Is it me or is the guy just a massive dick.

They are running scared though, if a teacher "knocked a kid's religion down," so to speak, his parents would come in all angry ad gooseberry fool and the teacher would be suspended. They want to keep their jobs so they take the softly-softly approach.

The Archbishop of Canterbury is being fairly reasonable here.
