I'd love for someone to point out a better straight FPS than Doom and give some reasons, like I actually did. Maybe I'd pay more attention that way, rather than some imbeciles saying "lol you're wrong" over and over which really is laughable.

What's the definition of a straight FPS? No vehicles?

Pure shooter, not bogged down by story or overly complex mechanics. Just get from point A to point B, shooting anything and everything.

That's how I'd define a straight FPS.

Too many non-skippable cutscenes.

6?
With about an hour long gap between them

That's one, yeah. Painkiller, too - the story is basic enough. Neither are Doom beaters, though.

6 too many. Unskippable cutscenes are unforgivable in a game where the story is so irrelevent.

Do you not count Quake 2 as a straight FPS then?

If not then Serious Sam and Painkiller are both better than Doom...not more important or more memorable, but definitely better.

I'd count all of them as straight FPS, but nobody really gave any reasoning and were too content in being dismissive.
I'd agree that Serious Sam, Painkiller and Quake 2 are all excellent straight FPS, but I'd honestly still take Doom over them all. Though Serious Sam really does raise a laugh, especially in Second Encounter with that hill climb with an avalanche of screaming headless guys - what makes it even better is the Christmas music that plays during this 10 minute onslaught, all the while I'm trying to keep ol' Sam alive through the laughter!

Pity Serious Sam 2 was so gooseberry fool.

"It just plays better," would be fine enough reasoning since the games are still quite shallow, since they're just straight shooters.

Why are they better?

Better levels, better enemies, better AI, better weapons. Take your pick. Some or all of those apply to all three of the games mentioned.

They are just better games, lots of it is just down to improvements in tech over the years, you can't deny that, the lack of real 3D in Doom is an issue, it limits how much of a shooter the game can be for starters pretty obviously. There are some improvements that just make games better, this is one of them.

Quake 2 moved the game design on quite a bit too, with its nonlinear level makeup.

Personally I don't think that any of these games are in any way relevant to today. Half Life changed everything, theres no place for a 'classic' FPS that does nothing other than the basics any more.

It's all subjective as usual, I've yet to find a straight FPS to beat Doom, whereas others obviously prefer a different game.

Hard to believe all this started over me saying Doom is better than Goldeneye!

EDIT: Have you tried the 3D mod for Doom, H? It makes it an even better experience in my book, at least.
Also, I find it depressing to think that people honestly believe there's no place for an 'old school' FPS like Doom/Quake/Painkiller anymore.

There probably isn't to be honest. People want story and cinematics to some extent these days. Bang for the buck and all that.

Why have just one thing when you can have more?

Add in more story, scripted sequences, large setpieces, nonlinear levels, smarter AI...and still have a great shooting experience on top of all that.

Why would you just want part of a game, when you can have the whole thing.

Sometimes we don't want or need tactics, A.I., nonlinearity or overdone storylines, sometimes all we need is an excuse to go apeshit and mow down an army of aliens/demons/whatevers singlehandedly.

Simplistic, I know, but simplicity can be the greatest thing in the world.

Theres no reason a game can't offer that experience while also offering those other things...in fact lots do.

EDIT - I know what you are saying, I just don't agree that having a 'simple' shooting experience necessarily dictates you can't have any of that other stuff without taking something away from the 'pureness' of the shooting. Remember even Doom featured key puzzles and secret areas.

Think of it this way, H: imagine a FPS akin to Crackdown, a simple and basic story to set the scene and then just let you loose on anything with (or without) a pulse. That would be my dream for this kind of FPS.

I guess in some ways MAG may actually be like this, but it'll be purely online.
