When I was younger I would get a free bus to school that was paid for by the local authority due to a few years prior parents making a big deal about how remote the area was and how unsafe the winding country roads would be for children to walk down in the dark of winter.

We would have many different drivers all with different personalities, bur most of them were bored jobsworths due to our shitty behaviour wearing them down over time. It was normal things, like pressing the bell, opening the emergency doors, smoking in the back, which I'd imagine most school bus drivers would have to deal with.

There was this one driver who we quite liked, however. He was younger than all other drivers and really friendly. He would let us stand at the front if we wanted and chat to him. Over time this would progress to sitting on the dash by second year, being very comfortable with the situation.

Then one day, and I can't remember why, we stepped it up a notch. As he was driving down these narrow country lanes 40+mph with hedges on both sides we would take it in turns to open the door, hold onto the rail and see how long we dared to hang ourselves out.

One of the times I did so we were over taking a cyclist, and I almost caused her to crash and she ended up calling the school.

I got into a load of gooseberry fool, and the driver was fired.
