Let's say you have to pick 7 things - consoles, people, games, features, etc - that defined/redefined our hobby and, for you, are integral to it.

It could be a game-changing feature, a person who has had a massive impact, or simply a game that you think deserves the accolade.

Feel free to give reasons as in-depth as you like. I'm sure people will complain about this being 'too broad' or something, but hey - you don't have to participate, and breadth is kind of the point. Gaming as a whole.

I just started writing mine, but couldn't choose 7. :fp:

Will add mine later - what would yours be?

The Halo Series (the games, the books, the soundtracks - I love it all, my top gaming franchise!)

Image

Unreal Tournament (my first true love in the FPS genre, I still go back to it today)

Image

Online Gaming (co-op and competitive, online makes playing with friends super easy)

Image

Xbox 360 Controller (the controller best suited to me so far, fits snugly in my hands)

Image

Bethesda Game Studios (been a fan since Morrowind, their massive games are a treat to explore)

Image

First-Person Perspective (most of my favourite games use this perspective, it adds a lot to the feeling of immersion for me)

Image

Xbox Live Arcade (my favourite aspect of this gen, lots of cool little games on XBLA and services like it)

Good idea for a thread.

The original Seven Wonders were constructions of epic scale, but to best apply the concept to gaming - which is obviously more interactive than marveling at architecture - I reckon the 'wonders' would have to be seven moments. Here are mine, in chronological order (spoilers!):

Everyone over a certain age remembers the moment they figured this one out.

(If you didn't play this before the internet - hell, before games magazines! - then you missed out)

Playing the greatest multiplayer game of all time with three friends.

(Ran a YT search for "Mario Kart 64 multiplayer" and a video by Chalkitdown comes up. Small world)

Hopping the fence at Lon Lon Ranch.

(There were so many OoT moments it could have been... went for this one just for the cinematography of it all. )

For this one, the 'moment' is different for everyone, but that's the beauty of it.

(The architecture of this one got me thinking - it'd be interesting to do a Seven Gaming Wonders with in-game structures, a la the original Seven Wonders - so, for example, you might have a particular area of San Andreas, a Zelda Dungeon, etc. - each is a built environment, after all!)

Welcome to the next generation... last generation.

(Best Halo moment ever? I reckon so)

Ultimate stress release.

Possibly the greatest flashback ever.

(SMG2 made me swear like a demon and cry like a little girl at times, but then it went and did something like this that put a great giddy grin on my face so it's impossible to stay mad at it.

Showing my age here! Mine are a mix of moments and actual stuff.

Chuckie Egg on the Acorn: Watching my dad go nuts as the giant chicken chased his farmer got me into games. We aslo had the old box that used to plug in to the telly with the 300 games in 1, that were all really just versions of Pong!

Donkey Kong - Table Top version: Again my dads mental scores on it and having a first go on it.

ZX Spectrum - So many games for so cheap 1.99 Hitsquad range anyone?

The 3 arcade cabinets in my local greengrocers - stuff like Shinobi, Streetfighter, Sidearms, WWF Wrestling etc. Strolling in and there might be a new high score on there, a new game in the cabinet and always people in there. It was almost like a community centre!

NES - Playing Super Mario Bros for the 1st time. I recalling telling my mum I'd never need another game :shifty:

Online gaming - How did I play without going online before! It's the first thing I check now, who's on, what are they playing?

PS Vita - I'm now playing and not feel like I'm missing out or playing a "lite" version of a game when the opportunity to play at home isn't available!

Looking at the list it all seems like early childhood stuff where there was lots of different experiences for the first 5. There's a lot of consoles etc I could put in between NES and finally going online with my 360, but they do just seem like advancements of the same thing really. Which boils down to <doffs my old man hat> these new gamers don't know they're born!

7 Things I think have got us to where we are today. Not necessarily my 7 favourite things about gaming but take one away and I think we'd probably be in a radically different place.

Firstly, what a brilliant idea for a thread.

I'd have to think a bit longer, as I'd rather be objective about my choices rather than pick seven that have personally impacted my gaming life, but one that would absolutely have to be in there is this:

It's the greatest moment of competitive gaming ever, without a shadow of a doubt. In a sense it's like performance art - a public demonstration of mastery.

I'm going to go with 7 games that shaped the industry.

1. Pong. Simple really. Pong wasn't the first video game, but it was the first hit. The first games machines many people bought were Pong clones by a myriad of manufacturers. It was simple, fun and competitive. And, it was multiplayer.

2. Super Mario Bros. Absolutely incredible game, which made the world think twice about the value of video games as an entertainment medium. ET very nearly killed the industry off. Mario revived it with the perfect blend of gameplay, level design, challenge and sound.

3. The Legend Of Zelda. It let you save the princess, as well as your game. If you don't know why this is important, you are on the wrong forum.

4. Final Fantasy. Proved that traditional RPG games can be transferred to video games. Also, it saved Square from going bankrupt.

5. Wolfenstein 3D. The codifier of the FPS genre.

6. Grand Theft Auto. Pioneered not only the open-world sandbox, but was one of the first games to make you the bad guy.

7. Half-Life. Perfected the First Person Shooter, and managed to tell a great story without ever taking control away from you.

Why don't you do that? The beauty of this thread is that it's so open to personal interpretation.
