by Buffalo » Sun Dec 04, 2011 12:00 pm

Oi oi! Welcome to the GRcade Game of the Year Awards 2011 voting thread!

Please take a few moments to read through the rules before submitting your votes.

THE RULES

1. Please copy and paste the Voting Form (found below) and enter your votes next to each award category. You can either submit your votes publicly in this thread, or you can send them privately to me via PM if you prefer.
2. You are permitted one vote in each award category. If you provide more than one vote in any category, only the first choice listed will count.
3. Vote for games released during 2011. Wikipedia has a few pages dedicated to 2011 in gaming, which may be of some use to those of you with bad memories:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:2011_video_games"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_in_video_gaming"
4. Feel free to vote for imported games released during 2011 in the US or Japan.
5. There are quite a few award categories, but it is not required of you to cast a vote in all of them. Vote in as many categories as you wish.
6. If you want to provide reasons for your choices, please go ahead. This is entirely optional, but it can make for more interesting reading, and I'll be including as many as I can when the awards take place
7. Voting ends on the Sunday 8th of January 2012. You can go back and edit your votes at any stage prior to this deadline, but as of the end of the 8th of January your votes are final. The votes will be counted and the results will be posted a few days after the voting has ended. We’ll be having a special live awards show, whereby I shall announce the winners.

Overall Game of the Year: Dark Souls

A relatively easy choice, considering it's probably my favourite game of this generation also. All the concerns I had over it potentially being a watered-down version of its predecessor were quickly swept away - if anything, it's even more ambitious, even more engaging and, yes, even more obtuse than Demon's Souls ever was. The greatest example in recent years to support the argument that a developer's intended vision can (and indeed, should) trump perceived ideas about what a video game has to look like in 2011. It is supreme.

Best Action/Adventure Game: Dark Souls

See above, really. The world it drops you in allows for that sense of getting lost (quite literally, sometimes) in an adventure. It's not about going from A to B to C and knowing exactly what's expected of you along the way - it's so much more than that.

Best Fighter: Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition

The best fighting game of this generation made better. Easy one.

Best Platformer: Super Mario Land 3D

Personally speaking, my favourite Mario game since... well, since Super Mario World, really. For all the superlatives gushed about the recent Galaxy games, this somehow managed to capture the spirit of what made the Mario titles all that they were in the 90s and bottle it up for a new generation. The fact that it's the clearest argument for 3D gaming to date is almost an afterthought.

Best Puzzle Game: Portal 2

Not the best year for puzzle games admittedly, but that shouldn't take anything away from just how much of an achievement Portal 2 is. It's easy to sit back and make unfair comparisons to its admittedly superior predecessor. Those who choose to do just that may want to be reminded that, in-between rebuilding all the elements that made the original game so great, the sequel is also the series' narrative conclusion, its first multiplayer entry, and an accessible mainstream title for newcomers to boot. Wonderful stuff.

Best Racing Game: Mario Kart 7

Best RPG: Dark Souls

Not going to go on about this for much longer, but taken solely on terms of an RPG, Dark Souls is once again an achievement, most notably in how such stories can be told. Not since Lost Odyssey has a game made such a stake in rethinking how much a narrative needs delivering through NPCs or text boxes - gradually, ever so gradually, we're learning that game environments alone can sometimes do a much better job of it.

Best Shooter: Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Almost without trying, really, because if there were a category for Best Stealth Game, I'd have yet another easy decision to make. But it mixes shooter elements in there equally well, with quirky non-lethal force weaponry playing just as much a role as the more conventional gun porn offerings.

Best Sports Game: N/A

Best Strategy Game: Frozen Synapse

Its ideas aren't particularly new, its finished form far from flawless. With a story that is largely hogwash, an online component not without issue, and even its makers admit that, at its core, it's essentially a top-down Counter-Strike. But I don't think it's too much of an overstatement to say that, in 2011, Frozen Synapse has renewed my faith in a genre that really did look like it was running out of ideas. Such a great example of how a degree of simplicity is always, always a good thing when it comes to the core of good game design.

The Oddball Award: Frozen Synapse

A turn-based, independently-developed strategy game with the face of Darwinia and the spirit of Chess, made by a couple of British graduates and sold in packs of two to encourage its multiplayer side. Thank heavens for oddballs.

Import Game of the Year: N/A

Best New Downloadable Game: Frozen Synapse

...oh, and it wouldn't have worked at retail. This is what digital distribution looks like when it's done right, folks. DRM-free, registers on Steam regardless of its source, and just a bloody lovely little game overall.

Best New IP: Frozen Synapse

It won't get a sequel. It probably doesn't need one - what more is there to add to a game that allows for random and user-tailored maps playable online? I don't think that question has an answer.

Best Retro Re-Release: Street Fighter III Online Edition

Many developers get given the opportunity to tune up a retro game for re-release. Very few do it with the degree of reverence that Iron Galaxy studios had for SF3, and my word does it show.

Best Downloadable Content: Rock Band 3

Open question - why do we need Rock Band 4? There's a Queen pack coming next week, most of which could probably have been used as the bulk content of a full-fat title. This could go on, and on, and on, and hopefully that is exactly what will happen.

The Innovation Award: Frozen Synapse

Play by email? Dedicated lobbies? YouTube Integration? In my indie game? It's more likely than you think.

Best Visuals: De Blob 2

Largely ignored, a fact only to obvious in how quickly it dropped in price from an already-reduced RRP. Hopefully it'll find a new life in the digital world, because there really is nothing quite like seeing the black and grey environments get splattered all over by... the blob.. It just looks lovely, really, it does. Give it a whirl if you didn't bother the first time round.

Best Audio: Portal 2

Astounding voice-overs aside...

Best Multiplayer: Portal 2

Me and TNAG burned through it all in a couple of sessions, and had a whale of a time doing so. And this just reminds me that we have the new DLC to go through too. Hooray!

Developer of the Year: From Software

Dark Souls this year, a new Armoured Core next year. From Software - I salute you sirs.

Publisher of the Year: Nintendo

Pumping out quality games Mario like it was 1991. Why not, eh.

Best Trailer: Street Fighter III Online Edition

Hardware Platform of the Year: PC

Between Steam sales, superior versions of the year's best games (Deus Ex, Portal 2 and Skyrim say hello), and an indie scene that continues to thrive in ever more exciting ways, PC gaming lives on. It'll probably die in 2012 though.

Games Magazine of the Year: Games TM

Eh, three issues for a quid. Seems alright, inasmuch as any games magazine can be relevant these days.

Games Website of the Year: Rock, Paper, Shotgun

...and here's why the above rings true. Passion? Check. Quality writers? Check. Sacrificing editorial integrity for a few advertising coins? A hearty non-check.

Games Podcast of the Year: N/A

Top Gaming News Story of 2011: Wii U reveal

New console, innit. Needs a better repeat performance next year though.

Biggest Disappointment of 2011: Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine

Copied from a post I made over on rllmuk:

Image

Look at that picture. Just look at how gloriously silly it is. It's an eight foot spaceman driving a sword that also happens to have the qualities of a chainsaw across the neck of a green alien. Two races from an utterly batshit insane universe, populated by elder daemons of unspeakable horror and psychopathic religious zealots prepared to write off countless numbers of human lives to prevent the taint of Chaos. It has spore-like ravenous beasts traversing the blackness of space, solely intent on harvesting planets of every living life form that happens to grow there before finally cracking open the very planet itself like a giant strawberry floating kinder egg and moving on through the abyss. You've got aged beings of fallen grace, doomed right from the start but determined to hang on to what little life they have left in this insane existence. Grizzled human soldiers, at home in both the overpowering jungle or the barren tundra, but utterly disregarded by most other sentient beings in any scenario as nothing but walking hunks of bait. Psychically necrotic robots, many millennia old. All of the above find themselves populating a universe overseen by a failing bigot, a once-great warrior who now consumes the sanity of a thousand worthy followers every day just to keep him seated upright in his decaying throne.

What sort of game could you make in that universe?

Turns out, you can make a game in which you shoot at some things and then you start hitting some things and you press X as many times as you can in order to hit the things some more and hopefully you hit them enough times in order to get some health back at which point you can then go on and hit some more things. If you hit all the things before the things hit you, with both bullets or blades, you win. If not, you try hitting the things again.

Such, such a sadness.

Most Anticipated Game of 2012: Mass Effect 3

Shepard.

Since that is standalone I'd say it was a downloadable game rather than DLC.

Yeah I thought so. I'm kinda stumped at that one, to be honest.

Although Undead Nightmare won this award last year, and that's standalone.

Wasn't that only in the retail release, however? (a la Episodes of Liberty City)

Another question, does ICO/SotC collection count as a 'Retro re-release'?

Undead Nightmare was download only at first, and I think you needed the original RDR disc to play it? It came out as a standalone later in that year.
And the answer to your question, Hugo, is yes.

So that was DLC, or a retail game. Not a downloadable game.

I think Festival of Blood has to go down as a downloadable game, its like the Dead Rising downloadable games.

No 'Best Soundtrack' category? Battlefield 3 easily takes the cake for best in-game audio, but I listen to the Deus Ex soundtrack daily.
