A sad event sure, perhaps with longer lasting impact (perhaps), but its hasn't/won't cause any immediate change to Nintendo or gaming in general. Its a little bit more abstract as an impact on gaming than a game announcement.

I can understand either point of view it just doesn't stand out to me as a surprise that people are choosing something else to focus on.

Good grief I look like such a Nintendo fan. There were easily 5 games I enjoyed more than anything on a Nintendo console, but there's nothing particularly fresh about the look or sound of Witcher 3, Fallout 4, or Metal Gear Solid 5. Splatoon certainly has it's flaws, and as I mentioned above, it's nowhere near my favourite game of the year, but I love how different it is.

Maybe people just prefer a positive story. It could even be said some of the game announcements were more shocking? I'm pretty sure they revealed a year earlier that Iwata had been battling with cancer, and we'd all seen how it was affecting his health. I think I'd rather remember the wow of something like Shenmue 3 being announced that the sadness of Iwata passing.

It's the saddest but I would feel weird voting my top story. As it's more human tragedy.

Like Suzz said, I'd feel weird classing it as a news story (not saying it wasn't). It was a sad, part of life thing that happened whereas I voted for the Konami stuff because it was an interesting thing to follow.

Managed to fit almost every game I love on there, left out rereleases (King of Dragon Pass), ports (80 Days) and any early access games that aren't at full release. LiS gets IP rather than any game award because some episodes were amazing some were a bit poo, a whole game of good episodes will be brilliant.
