The GRcade Years - Top 50 games

Anything to do with games at all.

Should we allow old games that got their first official UK release in 2008-2018?

What are you talking about? I've not read every list but there seems to be few Xbox exclusives mentioned.

Let's do this thing. Had a think about the games I've enjoyed most in the last 10 years and ended up with a shortlist of 12. I'll start with the two honourable mentions that fell just short of the top 10, Resogun and Everybody's Gone to the Rapture. Resogun because it is just a cracking shooter and made me feel like I still "had it" as a gamer, being one of the first platinums I got on PSN (can't remember now whether it was this or The Walking Dead on PS3 that was the first). EGTTR is just sad and haunting and although not for everybody, a "game" you should experience if you can.

….but now the main event (in reverse order).

10. Dead Space.
9. Horizon Zero Dawn.
8. The Evil Within
7. Little Big Planet
6. DriveClub. Racers is not a genre I'm overly keen on but this was just so good and I played it so much, warrants special mention.

That all important top 5....

5.
Destiny. FPS with drop in and drop out co-op with anyone. Utterly loved this even though I was not part of the GR in-crowd. It was still great with randoms.

4.
Demon's Souls. Where it all started. Love it. So strawberry floating unfair! Love it. Repeat until completion or you give up (I completed it :datass: )

3.
Heavy Rain. Was not very keen on this at first but I reached a point where a switch was flipped and at that point, it was just awesome all the way through. Downloaded it recently on the PS4 and might one day play through it again.

2.
Until Dawn. Utterly adored this. Being in your own horror film, this must be the best attempt at a decent, working horror genre ever. I'm not a fan of DLC but if there was some available, I'd lap this up. Like all of the great games, no sequel. :(

1.

Tales From The Borderlands. I know, surprise huh? But this is one funny game (I mean really funny). If you don't LOL at any point, get the first available appointment at your doctor to see what is wrong with you. I loved the characters, enjoyed the story and it made me laugh. Very little else I could ask for from a game.

My list:

  1. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 - for over 10 years, Tales of Symphonia was my favourite ever game thanks to its addictive battle system, unforgettable music and memorable voice actors who gave life to an engaging story. All that changed when I played through Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and found everything that I loved about Symphonia inside a huge world that I could explore for countless hours and enjoy doing so.

I thought that it would be another 10 years before something else topped Xenoblade but it quickly happened when I really got stuck into Xenoblade 2 this year. It builds upon Xenoblade 1 in a way that I've not really seen in other sequels as its battle system has a lot more depth - one of the few criticisms that I have is that the basics aren't explained well so you benefit from playing Xenoblade 1 but to get a better grip of the mechanics, not the story. Anyway, I've put over 70 hours into this game and I'm not even at the halfway point, have the huge DLC expansion to experience afterwards and I'd be more than happy to delve into NG+ if I had the time.

I'm really feeling it! :toot:

  2. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - I love Skyward Sword and Majora's Mask but Breath of the Wild is so captivating that I spent over 80 hours playing it and only doing half of the main quest. I never thought that something so drastically different to my favourite Zelda game (Majora's Mask) would top my list of Zelda titles but Breath of the Wild has done it by creating a huge world that is a joy to explore.

I spent over 80 hours making my own way around the world and only doing half of the main quest. The mechanics, to me, made exploring the world a joy and I can't imagine playing a game like this without the ability to climb as Link does. Despite my love for Xenoblade 2, I often find myself missing the paraglider and scaling cliffs at will. Even the lack of traditional dungeons can't hamper the fun as the whole world feels like a big dungeon that you can explore and will challenge you at any moment.

By the time I was free enough to get back to BotW, Xenoblade 2 was close to release so I decided to postpone the last two Divine Beasts until I had finished Xenoblade 2 - clearly that is still yet to happen but I might restart the whole of BotW on Master Mode to experience the extra difficulty in the bits that I've already played and then go on to finish the game. :toot:

  3. Super Mario Odyssey - Super Mario games always put a smile on my face because of the bright and colourful atmosphere, catch music and range of gameplay levels that let me quickly breeze through something for fun or really challenge myself. Odyssey takes all of these points, shakes them up with a whole new set of worlds and gameplay features then delivers a package that keeps me smiling every second that I play it and humming the tunes to myself long after I've put my Switch to sleep after a thoroughly enjoyable gameplay session. It really is the personification of fun and a perfect game to complement Xenoblade as I find myself dipping back into Odyssey, even after beating the final boss, to play around in the magnificent playground and gather the remaining moons and hunt the harder ones that are unveiled in the post-game sections.

  4. Super Smash Bros for Wii U
  5. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  6. Dark Souls
  7. The Witcher: Enhanced Edition - I haven't played much of 2 or 3 but they're on my to play list. Maybe they'll be on the list in the next decade :shifty:
  8. Sid Meier's Civilization V
  9. Splatoon 2
  10. Super Mario Maker

Honourable Mentions
I only wanted to include one game from each series but these would easily contend for a spot in my top 10:
  • Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D
  • Super Mario 3D World
  • Super Smash Bros for 3DS - Smash Bros on the go in such an amazing format easily deserves a place on the list, even beside its bigger brother on the Wii U
  • Dark Souls III
  • Sid Meier's Civilization VI
  • Splatoon

My masters dissertation is due on the 28th and it's taking more of my time than expected. The results will be done as soon as I can afford to count them, until then consider the voting deadline extended to the 28th.
