The GRcade Years - Top 50 games

Anything to do with games at all.

Should we allow old games that got their first official UK release in 2008-2018?

Only voting for games I've played (so not voting for remasters or remakes of games I have played that originally came out pre-2008):

1. Red Dead Redemption

This was an obvious choice; Rockstar's finest hour and the best 'GTA game' of all time. Months of exploration and entertainment on a single disc.

2. Super Mario Galaxy 2
3. Pokemon Heart Gold
4. Rock Band 3
5. Pro Evolution Soccer 2015
6. Fable 2

Fable will always be one of those "what if?" franchises but the second game is the one that came closest to nailing it. A delight to play, though sometimes frustrating.

7. Poker Night 2

A surprise, but a tremendously playable game packed full of character, and utterly addictive. If you like Poker but haven't played this yet I'd wager (get it?) it's cheap on Steam...

8. Monument Valley

No game has justified mobile gaming before or since in the way Monument Valley has. Brilliant, beautiful, memorable, massively recommended.

9. Pokemon Platinum
10. The Beatles Rock Band

Pre-2008 pretty much describes my gaming preferences perfectly, it would seem.

My top 10:

1. GTA5
2. Skyrim
3. Mass Effect 2
4. Metal Gear Solid 5
5. Diablo 3
6. Football Manager 2014
7. Doom
8. Witcher 3
9. Batman: Arkham Asylum
10. XCOM

I'm sure I've missed a ton, but you can't cram them all into 10 spaces.

1 Dark Souls
this game took over my idle thoughts for what feels like 2 years. constantly playing, and if i wasnt playing i was thinking up routes/character builds/tactics for the next time id play it

2 Fallout New Vegas
just a beautiful interesting world to explore, funny glitches, dialogue, options. similar thing with builds and routes as Dark Souls kept me coming back

3 The Walking Dead

cried like a baby, hooked me from the start. most emotional game ive ever played

4 Fallout 3
similar to FNV just misses out because i just wanted to spend more time with NV's world than F3's - but its definitely not a 'worse' game in any sense

5 Skyrim

just misses out because i prefer the dystopian feel of Fallout to the swords & sorcery of Skyrim - Skyrim is more beautiful though

6 Left 4 Dead

played this constantly when it came out - unmatched visceral thrill of smashing through a horde and some hilarious multiplayer moments with the special infected messing stuff up

7 Grand Theft Auto IV
loved the setting, even though i think V was a better game, i definitely played IV more. i think i was just burnt out on GTA by the time V came out. i think the character switching also had a negative impact for me - i didnt really 'connect' with the mechanic, and i preferred having 1 protagonist ala Niko & Carl in IV and SA

8 Grand Theft Auto V

better game but played less for reasons above

9 Batman Arkham Asylum
fantastic combat, a 'fun' but dark story - better than the Nolan films :dread: great fun

10 L.A. Noire
unique experience. i really enjoyed the noir 40s feel which isnt something you see often in games. it had its flaws but it kept me hooked for the whole storyline. doesnt get enough credit for its novel approach imo.

so it seems like i like sandbox games then!
i really struggled to come up with this list  i tend to stick to games and play them religiously, and when i do try something new its typically old!
this is basically a list of all the stuff from the last 10 years that i actually played through completely at least once, and enjoyed.
i must have put 500 hours plus into Dark Souls/FNV/F3/Skyrim alone

GTA IV is older than GRcade, it came out April 2008.

I feel like I'm missing some games on my list or that I've played fewer games than I thought I have. There are a lot of games I haven't played yet and even own that I think would make the cut, but oh well. Also felt difficult to order the top 10 aside from the top 2. I'd tie a lot of them if I could.

Subject to change.

1. Undertale

A lot of people said this game was just the flavour of the month, but it still resonates with me and I had a blast playing it. RPGs are often hit and miss for me, but this one has absolutely no grinding. The script is smart, funny and quirky - like Earthbound's but tighter. In fact this game gives off Earthbound vibes in general, but in general is a much tighter experience. Goes with out saying but: the characters are great too. Toby Fox really nailed the emotional moments. Strong aesthetically too, especially the music. 10/10 game. I'm a complete fanboy.

2. LoZ: Breath of the Wild (Wii U)

Even the inferior Wii U version made me feel a lot of things. The first 10 or maybe even 20 hours made me think, "This is the best Zelda game ever." The experience was marred a bit by frame rate issues, which particularly ruined the immersion in town areas, and the game isn't perfect anyway. Can think of other Zeldas with better dungeons, for example. But overall this was a very solid and fun game with a lot to offer. I haven't even explored the huge map that thoroughly so I have a few enjoyable replaythroughs in front of me. This game is also gorgeous. Definitely the best-looking Zelda.

3. LoZ: A Link Between Worlds

For me this was a strong return to form for the series. I liked Phantom Hourglass a lot but ALBW is actually a spectacular game whereas PH was somewhat carried by the freshness of its gimmicks and being the first 3D handheld Zelda. And what a gimmick ALBW has. I feel like it's not really that unique - it makes me think of mechanics the Wii Paper Mario had (but I never played it) but it has a consistently good usage in this game. Very cool game and spiritually appropriate in its role as a sequel to A Link to the Past. The game is actually kind of revolutionary in the series for the way it manages items and allows you to complete most of the dungeons in any order (without glitches).

4. Pokémon Sun and Moon

Very refreshing new Pokémon game, most notably the new trials replacing gyms. The writing and look of the series has also never been so good. In the characterisation and dialogue department, X & Y seems soulless by comparison. Great music too - not that the music in Pokémon has ever been bad, but they really nailed the key themes in this one (rival: Gladion, the Kahunas, the evil team themes). Only real bummer for me is the lack of National Dex.

5. Left for Dead 2
6. Kid Icarus: Uprising
7. Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest
8. The Walking Dead: Season 1
9. Metroid: Samus Returns
10. Virtue's Last Reward

Comments coming for the other games later.

Honourable mentions in no particular order:

Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia
Persona 3 Portable
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Fallout: New Vegas
Valkyria Chronicles
No More Heroes 2
Fire Emblem: Shadows of Valentia
Luigi's Mansion 2
Devil May Cry 4
Grand Theft Auto IV
Sonic Mania
Fallout 3

Edit: Uh I just noticed the 'April' 2018 so I may have to knock off a game or two. Will sort it when I'm at home

Edit2: Fixed

Yeah. Until the Switch I had been out of gaming for a long time aside from a few PC games.

1) Breath of the Wild
- The best game ever made
2) The Last of Us
- Fantastic journey with a wonderfully realised world and excellent multiplayer
3) Super Mario Galaxy 2
- Possibly the best playing 3D platformer ever made. Lacks charm of original but the fun and creativity on show is unrivalled.
4) Alien Isolation
- Superbly realised world, hugely original, insanely atmospheric and best entry in the Alien franchise since the original film.
5) Bloodbourne
- Didn’t get it at first but with help of combat and lore guide it really shone for me. Building a character and learning to be a monster slaying boss is tremendous fun in the fantastical world.
6) Driveclub
- Best Arcade racer ever made. Looks stunning, insane amount of content and just feels great.
7) Uncharted 2
- Brilliant action adventure and the closest gaming has ever gotten to Raiders. Looks great, plays great, wonderful story and characters with huge replayability.
8) Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze
- The most fun I’ve ever had with a 2D platformer. Brilliant works and accompanying music.
9) Hellblade Senua’s Sacrifice
- Superb story in a wonderful world with great combat and a important message. The development should also be used as a guide for others in industry.
10) Fortnite
- Revolutionary multiplayer

I'm my struggling with a list of 10. Several games I instinctively thought to put on the list are from before 2008. Looking at everyone else's lists, there's a lot from the last decade that I'm still yet to play, and I can't bring myself to add anything from the last 2 years into the list, because what if it's not as good on reflection in another 10 years?

Left 4 Dead 2 - probably my most played game, with loads of free mods and maps. Looks dated now, but gameplay still holds up, even with randoms

LoZ: BotW - first Zelda game I’ve finished, but not even nearly 100%

Skyrim - although, to be fair, once I started modding that became the main attraction. I had it looking amazing

God of War - best looking game I’ve played (in 4K) and also the most solid fighting mechanic

Halo Reach - although I prefered fighting Elites, Reach for me is the pinnacle of the series

No Man’s Sky - sci-fi heaven, for me it was everything I wanted, even at release. Can’t wait to replay with all the updates and in 4K

Dark Souls - utterly engrossing, even though I couldn’t finish it - damn you Slough and Ornstein! I’ll definitely give it another go on the Switch

Smash Bros WiiU - seven players is the most fun local multiplayer I think I’ve ever had

Resident Evil 7 - I don’t think this one is the best in the series and I’d put at least another two resi games ahead of it in my top ten if I could, but they’re too old. Come January though, I think RE2 will place very high indeed

DKC: TF - couldn’t complete even one K level, although I unlocked them all after finishing the game. Innovative and refreshing while feindishly difficult, but never unfairly so

Honorable mention goes to Candy Crush

In no particular order:

Motorstorm Pacific Rift
Civilization V (with expansions)
Batman Arkham Asylum
Stanley Parable
Uncharted 2
Rock Band 2 (by all accounts 3 was the better game but I never played it)
Spec Ops: The Line
Saints Row IV
Papers Please
Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
