Anything to do with games at all.

Should we allow old games that got their first official UK release in 2008-2018?

With GRcade celebrating ten years this month I thought this would be a nice spin on the voting threads.
Where previous threads asked for people to vote on specific system games this vote will be covering any game released following GRcades creation.
Simply put, any game first released between August 15th 2008 and August 15th 2018 is fair game for a vote.
Each member will vote for ten games, with number 1 receiving 10 points and number 10 receiving 1 point.

A top 100 was considered but it's hard to know how diverse the votes will be, if a top 100 contains many games with less then 5 votes then it reduces the significance of the list. In which case a top 50 may be a more competitive list.

General rules for voting:
No voting for game compilations, singular titles only.
No voting for re-releases, ports, or HD remasters of games released before August 15th 2008. Games such as Resident Evil HD Remaster are disqualified but games that were rebuilt from the ground up such as Shadow of the Colossus PS4 and Wind Waker HD are allowed. Remasters such as Uncharted 2 on PS4 would also be allowed with the original game having been released after August 15th 2008. If people want to argue against this rule then they are welcome too.
There will need to be a discussion regarding games that received their first European/UK release after August 15th 2008. If we allow these games then it means people can vote for games such as Earthbound and Sin & Punishment on the lists. I will let the members decide whether we should allow this through a timed poll.
You can include a games DLC in your vote or if it is a standalone expansion include it as its own game.

It would also be appreciated if members could do the following:
Spoiler box their votes for easier indexing.
Comment on 1-3 of their voted games so we can use their comments when posting the final list.

Game votes will run until midnight on Saturday the 1st of September and the results will be posted before the 10th Anniversary month ends on September 15th.

So get voting everyone.

Okay, so here's my choices (though there were a number of years when i hardly played any games at all)...

1. Grand Theft Auto 5 - The greatest game of the entire decade!
2. Cities Skylines - A time sink like no other, this really is the finest 'Sim City' game ever created.
3. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - The game i spent more time on than any other, oh how i miss my beloved noob tube and exploding barrels.
4. Assassin's Creed Origins
5. Fallout 4
6. Watch Dogs 2
7. Assassin's Creed Syndicate
8. Yakuza 0
9. Far Cry 4
10. Far Cry 5

Disallowing Resi Remake HD but welcoming Wind Waker HD seems like a really odd distinction.

Not really sure how these two games are so different. The main change to both is a displaying in a higher resolution, Zelda has some minor gameplay additions, but its not really a complete remake in the same was Shadow of the Colossus on PS4 is.

Yeah I think things like HD remasters should be allowed especially if they improved upon the original experiences

I'm not sure there are 10 games I could nominate.

I've got enough changes to my top ten since I started tracking it that this is pretty easy. I obviously have had to make some changes where games in a series were released before 2008, and that in turn affects where they are placed.

1 - Forza Horizon 3 [10 points] - An excellent open world racing game exploring the wilds of Australia with a great number of events to take part in.
2 - Pokémon Omega Ruby [9 points] - A remake of my greatest game in the series, it added a lot of replayability thanks to the improved Secret Base feature.
3 - Mario Kart 8 Deluxe [8 points] - Having narrowly beaten Double Dash as my best Mario Kart game, this has a lot to offer for any fan of the series.
4 - The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild [7 points] - The only Zelda game I've put a decent amount of time into, it works as an exploration game that keeps on giving.
5 - GTA V [6 points] - Having mostly played online until I bought it for the Xbox One, I found the story of this one to be a great look behind the characters, with the exploration still being present.
6 - Sonic Generations [5 points] - Since neither Heroes or Adventure 2 can make the cut, my third favourite of the series takes its place here.
7 - Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 [4 points] - Nothing can beat Battlefront 2005 for me, but the second Force Unleashed game improved on the first even if it featured fewer levels.
8 - Super Mario Odyssey [3 points] - A great Mario experience that controls very well, it gets the world exploration feel down very well indeed.
9 - Elite: Dangerous [2 points] - Released on my birthday, I enjoyed this space exploration game - even if I never got the hang of combat to begin with.
10 - LEGO City Undercover [1 point] - A great original story within the LEGO-verse and one of the best LEGO games to date, it had a lot of funny moments and character interactions.

3. Dragon Age: Origins (2009, PC)
4. Diablo III (2012, PC)

It's shaky ground and I only include the rule because high resolution releases of PS2 games were so common last gen.
Wind Waker HD is definitely on a different level to REmake, REmake's most major gameplay adjustment was the free control mode. Wind Waker HD has features that are beyond quality of life changes like the speed sail and quest alterations (although those are significant in their own way). There's also the way WWHD utilises the wii u tablet to streamline menus and items as well as how the game now has first person movement and gyro aiming which changes the play pacing a fair amount. Also WWHD isn't just running at a higher resolution, the textures and character models have been recreated and look noticeably different.

Noting all that I think WWHD earns its right to be an option. SotC PS4 features few significant changes but still qualifies because it was built from the ground up.

Brilliant idea, Dig'!

But, man, this is difficult. There are so many games that I want to include... but ten spaces just isn't enough. Other games - such as Zelda BotW and Bloodborne - are totally ace but I just haven't yet put enough time in to include 'em in my top ten. Even so, Im comfortable with my choices.

jawa's Top Ten
1) Fallout 3 (Xbox 360 | 2008)
2) Mad Max (PS4 | 2015)
3) Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 (PS4 | 2017)
4) Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS | 2013)
5) The Last Guardian (PS4 | 2016)
6) Portal 2 (PS3 | 2011)
7) No Man's Sky (PS4 | 2016)
8) Wii Sports Resort (Wii | 2009)
9) Night in the Woods (Switch | 2018)
10) Final Fantasy XIV (PS4 | 2014)

jawa's Top Ten - with commentary
1) Fallout 3 (Xbox 360 | 2008)
Thinking back, it's the sense of being on an open-ended journey that I think sucked me in to this. That moment when you get to walk out into the vast Wasteland... and you realise that you can go where you want, when you want is just sensational. Combine that with visiting some terrific locations and meeting many great characters along the way (Fawkes  ) and it makes for a truly memorable adventure.

2) Mad Max (PS4 | 2015)
The game is so beautifully desolate. Combine that with a finely crafted cycle of exploration, collection and visceral action and you have a wonderfully addictive title.

3) Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 (PS4 | 2017)
Forget about licences and names, PES is all about the battle, feeling and emotion. Online matches become fifteen-minute rushes of life. This IS the beautiful game.

4) Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS | 2013)
It looks simple. Some call it boring. Others may prefer the term "pointless". But for those of us who have discovered the surprising depth and endless playability of Animal Crossing... it's just a nice place to be.

5) The Last Guardian (PS4 | 2016)
No game could live up to the years of hype and expectation. But this, for me, this did. Learning to communicate and survive with Trico through a thrilling adventure was such an incredible experience.

6) Portal 2 (PS3 | 2011)
An engaging premise, clever puzzles, the sense of learning and advancement, humour... Portal 2 has such personality. You really can have your cake and eat it.

7) No Man's Sky (PS4 | 2016)
Scale and sheer ambition; it was almost impossible to deliver against expectations but, over time, many facets have been chiselled and the game now stands as a genuine success. I feel that you have to enjoy and admire the achievement, even if a galaxy of unknowns still stand.

8) Wii Sports Resort (Wii | 2009)
Friends. Family. I have actually played a video game and had fun with so many people from those categories - people who don't usually play games - and that's thanks to Wii Sports. Sure, it may be "casual"... but don't under-estimate the sheer brilliance of bowling and table-tennis. A triumph for the Wii Remote!

9) Night in the Woods (Switch | 2018)
I did wonder about this selection. The journey isn't long. It's cartoony. But, my word, it grabbed me by the balls and poked me in the guts. The characters and conversations had such life to them; quite odd but yet so close to home. Who cares about brevity when something can be so full of heart?

10) Final Fantasy XIV (PS4 | 2014)
I tip-toed into the unknown and, a few years later, I still don't really know what I'm doing. But I love the scale and sense of camaraderie that comes from playing this endless adventure. It's the kinda thing that, whilst terrific fun now, you wonder where it may go in the future. And that's exciting!

I am genuinely frustrated not to have included Mario Kart 8 (Wii U | 2014) in my selection. I've enjoyed so many brilliant Mario Kart Mondays with some of you guys... terrific times! Same for Super Mario Maker (Wii U | 2015); Cheeky Devlin's GRcade Maker competitions were just fantastic fun :-).

My list, i'll try to get back to add more commentary but this is my top ten

1.Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
I don't think this one needs explaining, perhaps the greatest open world game I have ever played. If you can think it you can pretty much do it! Gorgeous art style and plays like a dream.

2.Super Mario Odyssey
The best 3D Mario game, Wonderful environments with real nostalgic moments that leave you with the biggest smile

3.The Last of Us
I really felt the sense of dread, the opening sequence and events really hit me hard and from that it kept me glued all the way to the end.

4.Splatoon
One of the best online games I have ever played, Splatoon 2 improved on a lot but I sunk more hours into the original. Easy to play no matter your skill level and just a joy to look at (fantastic soundtrack too!)

5.Batman: Arkham Asylum
6.Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
7.Enslaved: Odyssey to the West
8.Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction
9.Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition
10.The Walking Dead - Season one

What are the thoughts on a game like Rez Infinite? Is VR support and a completely new area enough to make it ok to vote for?

Votes:

1) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Breath of the Wild sets a new bar for open worlds and emergent system-based gaming, and is over 100 hours of the finest gaming anyone will experience.

2) The Last of Us

Potentially the most well-realised narrative driven game ever created, the entire game exudes polish, from the stunning visuals through to the brutal gameplay.

3) Uncharted 2

This is blockbuster adventure gaming at its finest, a non-stop thrill ride of glorious set pieces and endearing characters.

4) Celeste
5) Fallout: New Vegas
6) Mount and Blade: Warband
7) Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
8) Civilization V
9) Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes
10) The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

VR completely changes the experience of playing Rez and the game was altered to accommodate that. Area X is also very different to regular Rez in terms of visuals and control, it goes without saying that it was designed with the PS4 in mind.
To put it another way, if the person voting is considering a new version of an old game then they need to consider whether they believe the remake is big enough of a significant change over the original in terms of playing experience and features.
Basically, user discretion is advised when considering what to vote for. The main purpose of the rule is to disqualify games featured in the likes of Devil May Cry HD collection, Jak collection, Sly collection etc from voting. It's a soft rule for grey areas and a hard rule for obvious cases. As good as a game REmake is the HD version doesn't change the game on the level that something like Wind Waker HD does (nor does it need to). It's more about thinking of games as being representative of the period that GRcade has existed for.
