Thanks guys. I now am a Master of Science and a Master of Philosophy. What a horrendous thing to be. May the next 18 months fly by so I can be Dr E

You're doing your entire PhD in 18 months?!

It'll be a follow on from his masters years - it's quite common over here, a friend of mine took the same course from a Nuclear Physics masters straight into the PhD.

I did a BSc, then an MSc. My PhD is three years long. I'm 18 months into this but officially it is an MPhil until you complete the upgrade exam. It's a box to tick before you can proceed to PhD viva.

Nice one mate! Does this mean you can officially save me when I inevitably have a heart attack at Fratton Park?

I'd say it's a race between us to see who has one first. If you can do the same PhD as me then it'd be appreciated. Having each others backs etc.

Like I need to do a PhD to be as smart as a doctor.

This just in, teaching is strawberry floating hard ass work. Especially when you teach something you didn't actually prepare for because they just threw you in. :slol:

Went into the office today at 2.30, and only because I was hungry and didn't have food at home. The lab is totally deserted. Academia.

Doing a PhD is often crushingly stressful, but the days where your sole objective is 'buy a sandwich' kind of make up for it. :toot:

They really, really don't.

I'm re-editing and adding sources to my thesis right now, with the goal of submission by about mid-September at the latest. It's currently 87,200 words, with scope for at least another 5,000 and with quite a bit of tidying up needed to footnotes, bibliography and the analysis chapters. I'm paranoid I've missed a great amount of the scholarship on my subject.

I don't feel like there's a lot of flab on there - it's 252 pages, fairly concise, and my supervisor seems happy with what I'm doing. But he's not an expert in this subject(the failure in the press and public opinion strategies of Lyndon B Johnson as they pertained to Vietnam and the Great Society) - I am. Apparently.

I need to be up at 6.30 to drive to work for a twelve hour shift. In a call centre. Where I'll spend my lunch hour editing my thesis. And then go to my mums to edit my thesis a bit more - she lives closer to my office. Then I'll be up at 7.30 again for another 9 hour shift. :slol:

I definitely feel like I didn't sign up for this.

I would feel completely different if I were working on top of it dude, your time doing a PhD sounds like it's been really rough. :( It sounds like the end is in sight so keep at it. Do you have a submission date you're targetting?

No specific date, but given that I'm looking to teach tutorial classes at two universities from the beginning of the semester in September on top of the full time work, it's pretty imperative that submission happens before about the 21st of next month I'd say or everything will get on top of me.

I'm also looking to speak at conferences down in Essex and over in Middleburg(Netherlands) in November, and the adaptation of chapters of the thesis into journal articles needs to begin now so that I can apply for post-docs in the UK and America as well.

This is all working on the assumption that I'll pass of course, which I'm not confident I will - every day I seem to find a new source or a new bit of work that I haven't consulted and should have, or new scholarship from somewhere that seems to put my conclusions in jeopardy.

Currently I see my live-in GF for about an hour or two a day*, and most of my social interaction comes from taking care of the dog before late shifts(he's good company, and doesn't talk much) - I don't see the inside of my PhD building at any time right now except for the odd meeting with my supervisor.

There's no question I'd discourage anyone in my position from attempting a PhD with no funding - working part time to supplement income is fine, but a full time office job is not compatible with studying.

*You might think this is a good thing to be fair

Doing a phd WITH funding is still no picnic.

Never said it was! There's a reason why such a high prevalence of those in higher education suffer from mental illness, after all. I don't know about you guys but I never realised how isolating the process would be.

Did you get yours finished in the end, Trelliz?

I know that feeling, though for me the worst part of the Masters assessment was having to go and do a presentation. The actual paper dissertation was a breeze compared to that.
