I know that feeling, though for me the worst part of the Masters assessment was having to go and do a presentation. The actual paper dissertation was a breeze compared to that.

Did you have to do a viva?

Yeah. My Masters dissertation was on 3D Animation so I had to defend/explain things like my choice of software, modelling and animation techniques, Lighting choices. I even got quizzed on how I put together the DVD that I used to submit it, including my menu design and choice to include a voiceover outtakes section  (Though the examiner loved the outtakes so think I got some bonus points for that)

An outtakes section in a Masters thesis - that wins bonus points from me for sure!

Although to be fair I just wrote my acknowledgements section and the most earnest thank yous are to a cat and a dog. :slol:

If they haven't told you about it then it won't happen, we were all told well in advance that it was going to be happening.

Can't even remember if I had an acknowledgements section. God I just realised it's been 10 years since I submitted it :dread:

Just handed in a 94,000 word, 262 page draft of the thesis at 2am this morning. Been working on it at night while on holiday this week. Praying that this will be the last bit, that I'll get word back that I can print it, bind it and submit it next week. As of Thursday 21st September I've been at uni for ten years - make it stop.

Oh boy, time to apply for grants yet again. Maybe this year I'll actually get something. :toot:

Funny enough, if I do get the grant I am applying for (worth $30,000) I will lose my fully funded PhD for the year (worth $23,000) as I would have made too much money. :x

Oh and applying for these grants is a mandatory requirement of my fully funded status.

My viva examiners wrote:[Examiner] and I have checked the corrections and have conferred. With [examiner's] agreement I am emailing our joint decision. We are certain the corrections meet requirement for a PhD and fully approve the corrections. We believe this means [Trelliz] has met the requirements for passing his PhD and should receive it in due course.

We were particularly impressed with his additions on methodology and with his explanations of ressentiment. We checked all requested corrections and all have been made to a high standard.

That's incredible news mate - well done. Massive congratulations.

12 months left in my PhD. Spending 7 hours per day in the lab whilst trying to do the rest of my PhD and plan and deliver lectures. Feeling utterly snowed under and burnt out at the moment :dread: In a cycle of work, eat, sleep until the weekend and then trying to cram any social bits in whilst feeling guilty for not working :fp:

- High impact journal accepts and publishes paper with a protocol to assess reliability
- One year on, same high impact journal rejects paper using same protocol with three of the same authors with reviewer comments criticising reliability protocol.

:fp: ffs. Article submission is an utter crap-shoot.

Congratulations trelliz - really excellent news! Especially as I remember you had a bit of a panic towards the submission stage? Do you mind if I ask, as we're doing reasonably similar PhDs, if it was minor or major corrections, and what kind of thing did they want you to fix up?

Mini E - what year are you in - two or three? The stress and difficulty really ramp up as you get to the end. That guilt you feel for socialising won't go away either - best advice I can give is to force yourself to get out with mates as much as you can!

The last twelve months for me has been wake up, uni work, walk the dog, uni work, call centre job, uni work, sleep, repeat except those lovely days where I get a break from it all by taking a seminar. My supervisor told me cryptically that we were in "good shape" yesterday when he sent a list of minor things to change on my final draft(corrections to the title, I'd written doc. instead of document a few times in the footnotes), so I'm hoping that final submission will be later today or tomorrow.

Into my third and final PhD year mate. All enjoyment has officially left the building. Working with clinical populations really limits how fast you can move things along too. :dread: :fp:

I hear that - know a few people who've done sport science related PhDs bemoaning the various problems with moving forward due to similar issues. It's slightly different for me, I'm beholden only to myself and my supervisor so usually only have myself to blame!

Do you get a writing up period or any extra funding if you go past the three years?

Only if you buy my copy of Ikaruga

But seriously - yes, I had a major set of alterations prior to submitting it almost a year ago today; they said to remove a load of stuff about poststructuralism and Post-anarchist theory I had used to critique/understand hacker activist politics, which I dutifully did. As for the corrections they were put down on paper as major corrections with six months to do it because I was doing a full time job after finishing so I had to work on it during my lunchbreak/at the weekends, whereas if I was on it full time I could have cranked them out in 3 months.

However, I put all the stuff I had taken out back in again and the examiners said they really liked that stuff, so I feel totally vindicated 8-)

As for the corrections, they wanted a lot more stuff about methodology, an expanded conclusion as well as a broader literature review, plus several smaller tweaks here and there. Now I have to wait for the official letter saying I'm in the doctor club then I think that's it apart from doing a hardbound copy for the university to keep.

I still want it! Was pushed into my overdraft in August by some unavoidable costs though so may be a wee while before I can officially afford to chuck you the cash. :dread:

Anyway, that's cracking! Hope they get back to you quickly, and good that you've managed to get the work done. Six months worth of corrections is scary - my supervisors are happy with the size of my lit review but I'm more likely on shakier ground with the conclusion and methodology sections as well.
