Oops. I should really start looking this up before I write it down. Corrected.

Red and StayDead jump to mind as two who are doing stuff through the Open Uni; there are probably others around here somewhere too.

I'm just doing a few modules as they take my fancy to keep my hand in on the ancient history/archaeology/heritage side of things and stop myself going mental writing about disease and chemistry and pharmaceutical moving and shaking all day. I've completed one, which was great, the forums were useful and the lecturer's feedback was great. Had to force myself to do the work though as with a full time job it was easy to just forget it in favour of relaxing and it was a reasonable demand on my time. The one I'm doing the at the moment isn't for credits, it's a Continuing Professional Development course with the OU and British Museum on the Nebamun Wall Paintings in Ancient Egypt. It seems ok so far, good course materials, but I have until March 2013 to finish it in my own time with no deadlines in between now and hand-in of a final project and no fixed students or structure, so it's different and the forums are pretty empty and the tutor not as available or involved.

I am with the OU as well. I decided to take a short module on planets back in 2009 and enjoyed it so have continued to study there. Haven't really decided whether to go for a full degree, but am looking to get a Certificate of Higher Education (should get that this year) and then decide whether to go on for a Diploma.

Prices are going way up for the OU unless you're already registered for a qualification.

That module has been discontinued now. I think the latest planetary module is called something like “Stars, Galaxies and Planets”. The short science modules are currently £170 but as Red says, the OU fees are going to triple later this year, thanks to the Governments reform of higher education. People that are already studying can continue at the lower fees until 2017, but I think you have to have a certain number of credits under your belt.

I actually signed up for another two short science modules today (one on Volcanoes and one on the Weather). I will be two science modules short of a Certificate in Contemporary Science and so decided to go for it as that certificate is being discontinued next year.

Wouldn't it be better to sort the OP by institution and not forumites?

Because it's clearly the best. No snobbery and some decent departments (when I applied Civil Engineering was second only to Imperial. It then rapidly went downhill... I accept no responsibility for this) with lots of research led funding and support from the WAG.

Cardiff is also a cracking night out.

Not everyone wants to become a good little worker drone in the most efficient way possible with one straight career. You've only got one life, try and do as much as you want.

I think if you stretch yourself too far, you will just be mediocre at everything, that is why you can major in certain things and not everything. I mean apart from teaching ( :shifty: ) you have to have a few years under your belt as a policeperson or radioperson to move up in the hierarchy. How can you do that if you are split between three professions?
