I really need to get back to work on a paper I'm working on. A previous PhD student who worked with my professor wrote it, submitted it and it got rejected, so my professor asked me if I could improve on it. It should actually be pretty easy but I've just been too lazy to get my butt in gear and do it properly.

Probably shouldn't post a full text in here before it's been printed but will send you the abstract by PM. It's not overly complicated to be honest! Definitely the simplest of my PhD studies. I'm quickly learning how important it is to be able to deal with rejection in this business... I'm assuming you've been taught the same?

Really struggling with PhD bits at the moment. I'm getting married in the summer so have taken on quite a lot of teaching and fitting in PhD things around lecture preparation and delivery is so difficult. I've been nominated for a student-led teaching award though ( ) but at what expense? I think I'm going to finish a few months late after my scholarship ends which is frustrating.

Does anyone have an idea for an extra curricular you could do from home? I want to be able to apply for more awards, but so many of them have an extra curricular component to them, and it sucks as I live very far from my school and can't actually join any clubs. It doubly sucks as you just know a load of people on student government who get paid put that down and probably win.

Don’t worry - nobody finishes on time. I was four years and three months before submission.

I envy those who did this on a scholarship basis - this month I’ve been hitting 45 hours per week in the call centre I work in, alongside trying to mark essays and teach six tutorial classes, as well as finishing my own corrections(which are hopefully about to be imminently accepted ) and applying for jobs.

I’ve never had time to push for publication though due to work - this is seriously hampering my job prospects.

It's a great feeling, despite not having really worked in any field that utilises my PhD since I got it it's still probably the achievement that I am most proud of.

Thanks mate. Absolutely hating it right now - that is not the emoji my real face is currently representing. I'm underslept and miserable Waited twelve weeks to hear back about a submitted paper to a high ranking journal and received 5 lines of feedback rejecting the paper in broken English (both spelling and grammar) which rejected the paper on grounds that we addressed statistically in the manuscript From their comments about the purpose of the paper the reviewer clearly did not have a clue what the paper was about or hadn't understood what was written. The primary reviewer didn't even leave a comment. My DoS said it's almost worth complaining about considering how high ranking the journal is but we'll just create a ton of paperwork for ourselves. Three months of my life I spent waiting for that. Infuriating. Spent five hours preparing a job application to a University up north who then withdrew the post a few days after opening it. Tomorrow I have a lunch with a former student's bereaved family who took his own life. I'm also barely sleeping due to my exercise (which is the only part of my day keeping me sane) and trying to look keen planning my wedding in July.

PhD is class lads. Class.

That turned into more of a rant than planned my bad.

strawberry float’s sake mate, that’s vile. Is there no route of appeal for the journal, or can it be resubmitted at a later time? Shite about the job application too, it can be very frustrating applying to academia apparently, but hopefully it’ll get easier for you.

That student scenario is literally my worst nightmare - good on you for meeting the family, it sounds like you’re going the extra mile there and deserve your teaching award!

It gets easier. The three months leading up to submission were hellish - between teaching and working outside the uni I think I had about six hours a week to put into actually working on what I’d signed up for. I had to write during trips abroad, sneak in the odd hour at work etc etc. But after submission it’s like a tap turning off.

Good luck with the wedding! Hopefully it keeps you sane if the academic pressure starts to ramp up.
