I suppose a solution is a redundant display of the data, that is to say have the entire entry for JV under both Newport and Plymouth. That has the problems inherent with a redundant listing but might be the best solution. I'll look into it after I'm done collecting data.

Split up JVs entry? - You could separate out JVs degrees so he has an entry for one degree at one university and an entry for his second degree at the other university, etc?

That's what I meant when I said that loses the progression of someone's academic career was a problem - it isn't immediately obvious that JV went on to do a PhD from seeing his entry under Newport.

Potentially another way to approach this would be to keep this listing, but also have a Uni -- Members list underneath.

At the moment I'm looking into working in applied research (deciding whether I want to sell my soul to big pharma) or possibly science-related consulting. Academia is always a possibility but I feel like it'd be too comfortable - and my comfort zone always makes me uncomfortable.

Hime123 wrote:Kiera, how long did it take to get your PHD? I'm working with a guy who came over here to get his PHD but got as far as a masters in China, the masters was 3 years because they had to do lots of design and research for industry. Was it similar in Japan? Sounds a good idea, cheap labour for the electricity supply industry and funded 'work experience' for the students.

My course was originally meant to be three years, but research being what it is, I got zero results for the line of investigation I spent my first 9 months on and so basically had to change projects and start from scratch. Because of that, I had to extend by one year to get enough results and publish enough papers to graduate. My work was all pure research, mostly funded by the Japanese government.

Generally in Japan you spend two years on a Master's and three on a PhD.

In the UK PhDs can last from 3 or 4 years FT, up to 7 (or longer) if doing it PT. I was funded by the AHRC for three years FT, so I had a very good incentive to get it done quickly (submitted at 3 years 3 months, was happy with that). The UK research councils are setting up loads of doctoral training centres now, where typically the PhD is 4 years (first year been a research masters). It all depends on your discipline and subject at the end of the day though.

Just finished a piece of coursework due in this time next month - need to sort out the formatting and reference list but it's in a state where I can leave it alone now.

To hand in May 4th:

Research project (dissertation) - 6000 words
All research is done and I have started writing (a little bit) but I need to get cracking with it really.

3000 word coursework
NOT STARTED IT YET D:

You know that feeling of panic that starts in your stomach and makes you feel sick?

20 isn't THAT bad. You have useless authors writing like 90,000.

I wouldn't like to do it though, I hate researching useless things.

Define useless? You've got quite the knack for sounding condescending, manny.

I see. The way you initially phrased kinda made it look like you referring to Lagamorph's Masters dissertation as useless.

I have a 3000 word essay about dissertation sources due on Friday. Not even made an attempt to start it yet due to sorting out PhD applications. I won't panic until Friday morning though. 8-)

JV, how hard was it for you to get funding? I've applied to the AHRC but with only a 2:1 I don't think I have a chance. :(

Depends how highly you rate personal satisfaction and growth I guess. Also the process of writing in order to learn and develop the skill, considering very few people just write a book straight off with no prior experience at all and get it published.

I'm considered smart

20,000 words doesn't include any appendices though.... :fp:
And when your appendix contains programming code..... :shifty:

I'm probably going to get up to 20,000 for my dissertation :shifty: 12,000 words at the moment, and I haven't touched the final section (anaylsis, optimisation and material selections, and then the conclusions and whatnot).

What's your dissertation on, Dual?

20,000 was the requirement for my dissertation. Unless you could reasonably justify under/above, your dissertation needed to fall within the 17,000-20,000 word range.
This was at Masters level mind, so the requirements were somewhat higher and stricter than Bachelors level.

My lecturers seem quite... lenient when it comes to word counts. 10,000 is the minimum and there's no maximum, so it's effectively "just write as much as you need to to get your point across in as much detail as necessary"
