I'm confused. Does one not deserve congratulations over and over again for completing a degree?

I still wonder how it did it. I congratulate myself all the time. I am an eternal bachelor.

It scares me that when I joined GRcade (never mind Gamesradar), I was flunking my AS Levels, and since then have completed flunking my A-Levels, worked full time for two years, completed a three year first class BSc and a one year MSc with Merit and I'm over a year into my PhD.

This place is in my blood :dread: .

I hear that, ME. When I joined GR I was starting my standard grades(GCSEs). I've completed them, highers/advanced highers, a four year BA, a Masters and four years worth of PhD work. :dread:

When I joined GR, I was working in a dead end job with only GCSE's as qualifications. I had no girlfriend/wife or kids and was as free as could be to enjoy myself and do anything I wanted.

Now I am working in the exact same dead end job with GCSE's and a degree as qualifications. Now I am married with a kid when I could be having fun.

Progress. 8-)

One of the researchers I'm working with at my job used to be a professor where I am going to school, and when he asked me how the work load is balancing work and school I told him I am finding it a bit difficult (not nearly enough time to play games). I told him there is a lot of reading (I didn't tell him I don't do most of it though :slol: ) and to that he just responded, "oh no one actually expects you to read everything, just read the abstract. I would assign like three papers a week to read when I was teaching but there is no way anyone can do that, just read the abstract and summary at the end".

:|

Why would you do that if you know people can't actually do the assignments, wouldn't it be better to just assign less and have people actually do the readings?! I mean I probably would still just skim as he said, but I know there are actually people who do try to do all the readings! The poor souls!

In regards to my own educational pathway, I first posted on Games Radar because one of the ads in PC Gamer UK said you could even get help with your math homework, so that was my first post, asking for help with my grade 8 or 9 math homework.

Now I still bug Karl for help with my homework

Data collection 06:15-11:30 every morning, data write-up and feedback preparation 11:30-13:00, I'm in three 12pm-3pm taught sessions this week (normally one or two). Preparation of upgrade document 13:00-18:00. I have my 30,000 word Upgrade Document and a journal article due in two weeks and four days respectively.

I'm not particularly enjoying my PhD at the moment

That's a shitty schedule man, hope it evens out. The good old days of being an undergrad must seem like a million years ago.

Is the upgrade document required to switch from MRes to a PhD, mini? Sort of like the final masters dissertation? A friend of mine who is a nuclear physics PhD had to do something similar, I think.

I'm currently working full time in a call centre while trying to write up my thesis, so 35-40 hours dealing with insurance complaints, then having to gear myself up to write on my days off and before/after shifts. I've also had to schedule shifts around being available to keep an eye on Loki a few days a week because there's no-one else available and none of us can afford to hire a dog walker. Gym's out the window until the full thesis draft is done.

I am about to pass the 60,000 word mark though (suggested length is 80,000, which I'll make easily). Just the lit review and the conclusion to finish off before I start the process of making sure I haven't missed anything, that all the chapters stick together and are coherent, and hopefully submission in a few months.

I'm really quite worried that my supervisors have been lax as strawberry float when it comes to journal articles. It's been vaguely discussed but I haven't really got much direction on what to do/where to go/what I should be adapting into article form. How hands on are everyone's supervisors?

Thanks buddy. They really do seem a long time ago  - I was in the lab at 06:15 this morning and just finished work now and I've not written a single word down towards my journal article or 30,000 word upgrade document. I'm back in the lab at 06:15 tomorrow. I honestly have no idea how I'm meant to get this done. I've got a million other jobs and I'm rather reaching breaking point  :slol: :(

My DoS is not hands on at all as he's a very important person, very high up in the University stratosphere, but I know he puts in good words about me in equally important ears  - I have contact every single day with my second supervisor who would be my DoS if he had had a previous completion at the time of my application process. He's constantly reiterating the importance of publications in early career academic life. He's 31 I think and has 64 publications already. It's scary. Fantastic work ethic for me to be around, though.

Today I found out I need to get my stuff for my comprehensive exams ready by the end of the month, this means writing about 30 pages, while doing my two jobs.

Okay guys, I'm applying for an early years teacher training course, but I am 6 ucas points short  is it still worth me applying? What can I do? I've been out of education for 8 years so I'm really confused.

Do you have any key skills or music theory qualifications?

Do a key skills at a community college. It's piss.

Most entry requirements are actually provisional unless it's like, Oxford. If you can demonstrate you really want to and will benefit by doing the course, they'll take your money or the government's.

Case in point, I didn't technically qualify to go to university. I had enough UCAS points, but I didn't meet my offer conditions. Literally no one cared.

Okay cool, I'm past the deadline anyway (Jan 15th) I guess I will apply and if I don't get in this year I can do that for next year.

I'm just hoping that the course isn't that popular. Or that they have some kind of quota for men.

I don't think they can do that for discriminatory reasons unless it's a charity that specifically serves disadvantaged women.
