I've noticed the majority of tunes posted here are relatively "old". My collection holds most of these too. Hip Hip used to be my favourite genre since I was around 11 or so. Used to have a massive collection but more or less stopped listening to it into the 00's. I still listen to my old stuff but I find the newer hip hop to be pretty dreadful. The chart stuff is seriously dull. Even the chart stuff when I was listening to it was still good.

All I hear now is Kanye, Li'l Wayne and shitty "dirrrrrrrrrrrrrty South" stuff. Shame really. I'd be interested to know if there are any artists around at the moment who people can recommend.

Seriously, how can you relate to these tunes? All they sing about is hoes, diamonds, rich people parties, bling bling strawberry floating bling. yeah and drugs. Doesn't sound any different to me than the other gangsta tripe. not seeing the fun factor, either. Am I missing some satire or something?

He's got one or two good songs. My problem with Nas is that he bitches about white people too much. I don't mind the odd poke but this guy really goes for it in some tracks. Seriously, not all white people are trying to keep a brother down.

i know why you don't see the fun factor though, but that's exactly what i'm on about.. i'm not saying you are like this, but it's usually nerdy guys with a beard and some flying lotus records that are dead against 99% of hip hop, claiming anything that isn't some backpacking gooseberry fool from the 90s with metaphorical lyrics about waterfalls and the system is just too gangster or bling for them to listen to at home on their computer.

what did you expect from me archy? i do like deeper rap music, i think the druggy bling stuff has it's rightful place too

Yeah I agree, it's something that really puts me off some guys in the hip-hop industry. I know it's dominated by black guys, but they really do alienate other races with some of the stuff they say, and even just how pro-black they are makes it hard to relate to for some listeners.

Black Thought and Common are two that immediately spring to mind for me. I think they're both great, but sometimes I just feel like they don't want a white guy listening to their music.

I try not to take music too seriously. Listening to music for me is 100% the best thing there is, but no matter what stuff I like I always try to keep a loose attitude about it all. Still, I like to poke other people and their tastes, so I purposely exaggerate my arguments sometimes.
I'm put off by this gangsta rap stuff (which is a crude generalization because I never really looked into it that much) because I'm not connecting with the whole attitude of being the best of the pack, having your gooseberry fool under control, having a posse and all that stuff. Because IRL I don't have it under control, I'm a mess, and I don't even have half a bitch to strawberry float. Death Grips on the other hand I can relate to because they transmit this feeling of hopelessness and chaos, and differently to Odd Wolf I don't feel like they're just trying to be controversial for the sake of it, but rather they've tapped into some primal vein and they're doing their own thing. But I could be wrong, I could be the victim of yet another music industry swindle.
I do have a Flying Lotus album, but I listened to it once, maybe not even. I'm sick of this ooh aah post contemporary music that's supposed to be profoundly revisiting old classic stuff through sampling and tinkering with electronics and stuff. All it does for me is make me think "yeah ok you're proud of your record collection. big whoop". At least Fatboy Slim had some funky beats. I heard a Flying Lotus track which I really liked, bought the album, discovered all the other tracks were boring. The same stuff has happened to me with other electro-whatever they call themselves hipster artists like Four Tet and others. Pretentious crap.
I obviously wasn't serious about my comments. You are the one who introduced me to Hella and other great stuff, so of course I'm going to make fun of you listening to gangsta rap. Which you tell me isn't really gangsta rap, so I'll have to listen to ASAP and co. a bit better. But despite what I just said above, for me music is mostly about the aural experience, not about the lyrics. I judge hip hop first of all by the beats, not the lyrical prowess. And those two tunes you posted don't do it for me. I could say it's because they're too simple and drum machiney, but I recently listened to some NWA stuff which is just as basic, but yet has a different quality of sound which makes me really like it. So I don't know, I just don't like it. I know I contradict myself when I talk about music - I like this x I should also like y but I don't. It's because I don't care about rules, cults, genres in music, I just like what I like. I couldn't care less about trve kvlt black metal or whatever, but I still prefer some black metal bands over others.
