Why do so many people use the internet to harass and threaten people, and stretch the freedom of speech to its limits? Director Kyrre Lien meets a global group of strongly opinionated individuals, who spend their time debating online on the subjects they care most strongly about. Online platforms are their favourite tools to express the opinions that others might find objectionable in language that often offends. Do they behave in the same way when they come offline?

Interesting mini documentary/series of short interviews, with people who spend their free time arguing online. Pretty bleak, mostly, but with a glimmer of hope towards the end.

The accompanying article is also worth a read:

https://www.theguardian.com/global/2017 ... ?CMP=fb_gu

What did Lien learn through the making of the documentary? “That many, many people are lonely – they feel society has left them behind – and that a lot of those I met are former victims of bullying themselves,” says Lien, “but ultimately, I learned that people are able to change, that we are works in motion. We can’t close our eyes and pretend that they don’t exist if we want to change the way we debate and communicate online. It’s important to listen to these voices now.

It took me a long time to realise that a lot of people on the net don't want to actually debate anything they just want to have an echo chamber. It doesn't matter how eloquently a topic is argued or how many facts are brought to the table or even the qualifications or job titles of those arguing if it doesn't fit their world view they will dismiss it out of hand and then just for fun complain that they are the victim because they are giving the facts that the main stream won't because it's all biased against them.

It's pretty much impossible to argue with such people as they honestly believe that everyone with a different opinion is mentally deficient or just plain bad people.

I think it comes down to the fact that a lot of people have very gooseberry fool lives. If you have a gooseberry fool life you're probably more likely to be a gooseberry fool person. If someone doesn't have the opportunity, the capacity or the capability to make positive steps in life, it's no wonder if they feel bitter and end up taking it out on other people.

I dunno, I've talked to plenty of very well off people that are still idiots in terms of the opinions they hold. I think some have just never thought of the possibility that they might be wrong, or they only see the issues from one particular viewpoint with no willingness to acknowledge any other facts.

I know what you mean, but being well off doesn't necessarily mean you don't also have a gooseberry fool life.
